Revs from stop...

What RPMs do you guys rev to from a dead stop for a smooth takeoff? If I release the clutch under 1500 RPM, it feels like I get clutch chatter or shuddering. Just wondering if it is a clutch issue....

Re: Revs from stop...

I rev it to somewhere around 1200 rpm normally.
a little aggressive launch, around 1800 rpm.
I've tried to launch at 800 rpm like someone said, but it usually results in shuddering.

Re: Revs from stop...

Can some post up timing and pedal travel lengths? I think I am still having a lil trouble of getting into 1st without the burn.

This is what I do...
Clutch down ---> Shift into first ---> Rev to 1.2k and hold it there ---> Release clutch to slippage point ---> Add more gas ----> Hold clutch at a higher slippage point for another 1-2 seconds ---> More gas ---> Release clutch

Anything wrong with that method? The smell that is eminating from the car comes from the slit between the door and front quater panel. Is the smell the clutch or is that just the smell of a new engine? *srhugs

It's the smell of your clutch getting burned, or should I say fried?

Re: Revs from stop...

let the clutch out smoothly so that when it's fully out you've moved about 5 feet. don't let it slip and then give it gas and then let is slip some more...

Re: Revs from stop...

I find a good way to get a feel for a car's clutch is to take it to an empty, open, flat area and start it a few times without using the gas to get a feel for how the clutch engages before you start throwing gas into the mix. Just SLOWLY let up the clutch, and you'll feel where it catches. Start the car a few times this way without using the gas, and it'll let you get a feel for how the clutch works. Add a little gas, and you can do it faster. You really don't need much gas at all, and you should be able to do it very quickly once you get a little practice like this.
What I often do is blip the throttle to shoot the revs to about 1500, then rapidly let the clutch up to the grab point and "catch" the revs and 800-1000 as I smoothly release the clutch the rest of the way.
If you're burning the clutch everytime you start, that means you're letting the clutch up way too slowly and giving it way too much gas. Your goal should be to minimize the amount of time that the clutch is partially engaged.

1200 rpms ?!?!?! sounds a bit low.
I usually bring it up to ~6700RPMs and just drop the clutch

J/K

I think I usually do it at around 1000rpms and just let the clutch lose while applying more gas as the car starts moving forward.

Re: Revs from stop...

Don't be too concerned about adjusting the gas... ideally you should take off at 1000rpm but with that damn throttle I can never hit it without concentrating!
so I just try to give as little gas as possible and it usually ends up to be 1200rpm - 1400. 1500 would be too high

So, with your right foot, try to give the minial amount of gas you can, and do it steadily. don't lift off suddenly even if you over rev (a little)

With your left foot, use the CLUTCH to control your launch. if everything is going smoothly, you can release the clutch quicker. if you feel shuddering or over revved,
press the clutch back down a little bit and recover.

Hope that helps. and all you can do is practice. believe in yourself and you will do it. The lauch should only take 1.5 - 2 seconds all together. try not to hold the clutch for so long.

Re: Revs from stop...

good, i thought I was the only one who had to concentrate in order to get going smoothly....For those of you who say you can do it at 800rpms without applying anymore gas and with having the clutch completely out, well then congrats to you and your the lucky ones of the bunch...If I'm ever that low my clutch shudders and i get the whole herky jerky from the car...I def need to be around 1000 to 1300 rpms for it to be smooth...

Re: Revs from stop...

Will you mess up the clutch life by taking off at 1200-1500 rpms?

Re: Revs from stop...

no you it shouldn't mess it up...don't forget while your taking off at 1000rpms which by the way is not much, other are dropping the clutch at 3500-5500 on a daily basis...And on my comment earlier I stand corrected, even though nobody tried to correct me? Anyways I went outside and slowly let the clutch out until I felt it catch and go...I did this without applying any gas at just about 800rpms...And it was smooth

Did you let the engine warm up before doing this? cause if the engine was cold, naturally it will run at higher rpms in the first couple of minutes, which will make clutch gliding much smoother... just a thought.
