MANUAL SHIFTER / TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS
MANUAL SHIFTER / TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS
what are the possible damages that can be caused by twisting the manual shifter incorrectly?
the stock cd changer in my G coupe had trouble playing cd's so I had it replaced a couple of days ago at the dealer.
guess what....after picking up the G, the manual shifter was easily turned and the shifting was rough and difficult.
I couldn't even put the shifter in the right gear because it felt as if something was blocking the shifter gates at times.
the first thing that came to my mind was damn, they must've twisted the shifter without using proper tools when they disassembled/re-assembled the cover of the shifter to put the new stereo in.
I dropped my G off at the dealer this morning and the service consultant just called to inform me that they placed an order for a new shifter and should be arrived on Monday.
my question is, was the shifter the only part that had been damaged?
the consultant said the shifter was the only part needed to be replaced, but I've read some article a while back that, by twisting the shifter incorrectly, the transmission can be damaged....if this is true, I'd like to know the details in how such damage can be caused so I can ask the right questions to the dealer.
a damaged shifter is one thing, but if the transmission has been damaged, I need to have them replace it.
I am so upset right now....just can't believe that the infiniti certified technicians were that stupid to make mistakes like that.
I know some of you guys are pretty knowledgeable in automotive mechanics and would very much appreciate your answers/comments/advice.
thank you.

Re: MANUAL SHIFTER / TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS
shifter DOES connect straight to the tranny. figure from there.
how can they twist it the wrong way?
lefty loosy, righty tighty. isn't that so?

Re: MANUAL SHIFTER / TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS
The transmission can be easily damaged if the shifter is handled incorrectly. In your case, if the shift **** was removed, and the technician did not hold the shift rod in place by using a wrench or pair of vice grips, then turning the shift **** would turn the shift rod, which would be using the transmission as leverage.
THIS IS VERY BAD and could cause gear shifting/setting problems. This is stated very clearly in a TSB that was released recently.

hi, Chris.
do you have the link to the TSB?
and how can it be tested or checked to see if transmission is indeed damaged?
they replaced the shifter, ****, leather boot and stuff, but from time to time, I feel like the shifting isn't as smooth as before....not sure if it's all mental.
