Sometimes I think 20% isn't dark enough. I went to a shop my friend went to and they did his STI for 150. The guy wanted to charge me 169 but I bitched asking how come an STI with 4 doors can cost less than a 2 door coupe and the guy pretty much relented and said he'd do it for 150 then. Good deal for me

In Vegas damn near everyone has Limo tint...hell even the cops do. Even though its not legal no one gets hassled for it...and when you got out of state plates its great passing by Cali cops with hella dark tent and they can do is watch... cost me roughly 145 cash for fronts/rear quarter panels/back/and front eyebrow...
That is incorrect. The law was changed several years ago. Some front tint is legal. You will have to look it up. Used to live there, but don't anymore so it doesn't matter to me.
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:
The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.
The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.
However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

Still illegal as far as I know! I was just stopped for it about a month ago, and the idiotic CHP kept repeating that all aftermarket tints are illegal on the front passenger/driver windows.
Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?

You posted the answer to your own question.
"clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays"
This is usually the lightest grade film available. I did this for years on various cars (including a ricer Accord) in California and was never ticketed, hassled, or questioned about it.
That CHP cop is wrong. They are wrong very often, but no skin off their back. The burden is on you to prove him wrong. Have you taken it to a state ref?
