the radio handles other responsiblities like the air conditioning and defroster so I think it is more than just a radio.
thats waht I figured.

The double din is the screen on the bottom that takes the place of the existing radio/cd setup. It's better because it has many more features like touch screen, navigation, tv, etc.
You can run it with or without the existing navi (that is show in this pic).

^^ shouldn't take nearly that long unless they are doing more like wiring or something complicated
^a double din is a radio that is much larger and generally has a screen of varying sizes. they offer a ton of different functions, better sound quality and control, navi, tv, etc. def worth the money if you can afford it. and from that price tag i would say you could
edit: yes it can fit in any year almost any car, 03 it would work perfectly

It's not my car my man, will be eventually but not now. How much would the double din cost if I had a hookup in the nissaan parts world who could get them at cost?
Also just an FYI,
Clarion discontinued the making of 03'-05' G35 head unit a very long time ago. So there is a very good chance that your dealer charged you the said amount for a refurbished unit.
If that is the case, then in a year or two your front speakers will start acting up., which is what happened to your old one I am assuming.
