6MT Q

6MT Q
I've had my 6MT now for 3 weeks and about 800 miles. Love the car to death, but just have a question about the feel of the shifter. Sometimes, when I shift into 2nd, I feel some kind of resistance. Nothing too hard, just like a bump on the way down. I've made sure that my foot is all the way down on the clutch and, yes, I know how to drive a stick. It doesn't happen all the time, but it has me paranoid and making really slow shifts thinking maybe I just need to get used to the shifter. Any help or am I just paranoid from reading all the negative stuff on the transmission in these forums?

Re: 6MT Q
That is paranoia. It's normal for there to be a little resistance. Now if there is grinding that's another story. Your G is still new and being broken in over time the shifts will be smoother. I have had mine for almost a year with 22k miles and i dont have near as much resistance as there used to be. The shifts are buttery smooth now.

Re: 6MT Q
actually, my car does this too, and i think one of my other friend's G. I usually miss second because of this (when i'm trying to go hella fast) and now that I changed to the nismo shift ****, I seem to grind the gears a lot (which sucks). I'm not sure, but maybe this is why people always complain about how our gear box sucks compared to other cars (as in not at smooth).

Re: 6MT Q
The 6MT of the G is not easy to drive. Shifts are short and precise, but it takes a lot of effort on our part. First I just wanna say that the 1-2 shift does have the most "resistance" and is very notchy when shifting. It's not a "bump" of resistance, it's the notchiness of the gearbox. Here are some pointers on shifting:
1.) Always make sure to push the clutch all the way in, and make sure it stays all the way in for the entire gear shift.
2.) Even at a redline shift, don't "overdrive" the gearbox. When you're doing a high-rpm shift, you have to let the clutch out faster when engaging the next gear, but don't make the shift super fast. Do the shift quickly, but don't ram or jam it into the next gear, this is where you will have problems.
3.) The gearbox needs to warm up. When you first turn on the car and you haven't driven it that day, it needs a few minutes to warm up with the car. During this time, it will be particularly "sticky".
4.) A lot of us have agreed that it's a good idea to change the transmission fluid every 12K miles on this car. It makes the shifting less notchy because the tranny fluid gets dirty (metal shavings, etc.) over time and doesn't work as well.
5.) As someone else said, the notchiness will get reduced as you put more mileage on the car.

Re: 6MT Q
I have the notchyness too.. but it went away after some shifting with the car off and clutch down. This is my second week having the car and I roughly have about 800 miles also. I spent about 15 minutes total speed shifting to break it in a little bit. It's a lot smoother now when driving.

Re: 6MT Q
Mine was broken in really nice (11K), but now that they replaced the entire clutch assembly due to a defective pressure plate, I have the notchiness back. I feel like I just learned how to drive stick again (been driving stick for 10 yrs). Anyone care for a milkshake? Anyway, it will break in eventually and will be much smoother. As far as missing shifts, I never had that problem. I can't really see how you can miss 2nd?
