buying modded cars
Is there any definate reason not to buy a used car that has been modified with custom racing muffler, intake, headers, chip, and bodykit? I kno the opinion is split on this usually but in this case im able to buy the car at under the edmunds.com value for it stock, so im basically getting all the mods for free and its only got 56k miles on it. Personal experiences and general opinions are greatly appreciated, thanks.

Theres nothing wrong with buying a modded car if it has quality parts from known manufactures. But try take into mind that with the desire to modify any car, usually comes the mentality of wanting to drive it pretty hard.
If your buying it from a private seller, consider taking it to a mechanic (preferably a friend who will look out for you) and have it inspected on a lift.

For me, it depends on the type of car and the age and demeanor of the person you're buying it from. If you're buying a modded civic from a 18yo kid (no offense to any young people here), chances are they drove the bejesus out of it and may not have taken the best care of it. Conversely, if you're looking at a modded G35 it may be different since the car and the mods are generally more $, and the owners tend to be a little older. To me this means that they are more likely to be responsible and therefore take better care of their cars, and that they are less likely to race every meat-head in a Mustang that revs up their engine at every stoplight. I admit there are exceptions to every example but this is my generalized opinion based not only on observation, but also my personal progression as I get older. I know I take better care of my cars now than I did when I was younger.

OMG, what do mods have to do with a quote "Good Engine?" I would think when we drop say $20K+ in our G35s above the cost of the car we'd take very good care of it. There's nothing on my G35 that isn't an upgrade or I wouldn't have changed it. Maintance....Red Line synthetic/K&N filters every 90 days, complete fluid changes every 25K miles. The catch can was one of my first mods cause I disliked the idea of oil in my upper plenum and it only captures less than a tea spoon between changes....not bad and way less than most! So you see your theory about modded cars and their upkeep/engine quality is wrong....another noob mental error!
