Gas: Does your mileage change depending where you get your fuel?
Being a member of Costco I get premium a lot cheaper than the other gas stations but I wonder if mileage changes if you get gas from Shell, Exxon, BP, etc....do places like BJ's/Sam's/Costco get their gas from whatever is left over? Do they have the additives/detergents/etc that the big gas companies use?
Better quality gas....better mileage!
I've heard is said over the years that all gas is the same, from my experience I don't believe that. At one time I used Union 76 gas like my Dad but then I discovered I liked Chevron better and actually got slightly better gas mileage. I don't know what company's like Costco use and I prefer not to shop at WallyWorld or Sams Club due to their policy's. Just because they're the worlds largest retailer doesn't mean there not abusive to their employees.
Saw a sign the other day it said, "God does have a sence of humor, walk around Wall Mart and look at the customers!" LOL

I get Shell V-Power most of the time, with some Chevron thrown in for kicks. Mileage seems a bit worse for me when I use V-Power, but it could just be by chance due to variable driving habits. I got Sunoco a couple times when I really had no choice, and actually got better mileage. But again, not sure if there's any base to these claims, just my personal experience. I stick with Shell whenever I can because of the superior additives.
IMO it doesn't really matter, but I've never bought Costco gas or anything. You may be able to see more of a difference with discount gas.

That's because Sunoco is GOOD gas. They make race gas. I can go to my local sunoco and get 103 octane for my boosted ride.
I work at the BP part time, I usually fill up either at BP with 93 or at Shell with the 93, I don't really notice a difference to be honest, but maybe the slightest tad better with Shell. it could just be me though.
if you are switching back and forth you really can't compare them since you have a mixture of the 2 in the tank.
I used to just get any gas but this last spring i switched over to shell 93 vpower only. That's all i use now and my mileage has gone up. I was barely getting 23mpg before and now i'm 26mpg now. That is the average for the entire tank which i reset everytime i fill up. I've always had the car aligned at the same place every 6 months and delt with the low 20's for 2 years before i made the switch. Since i made the switch on gas my car has been a few mpg better.
I tried the same thing in my s-10 daily driver and going from random 87 octane to only using shell 87 octane (always from the same gas station near my house) and i'm getting mid 20's and before i never broke 20mpg. I was even over 20mpg for a tank with over 100 miles pulling a trailer.

I can get Costco for $2.48 a gallon and everywhere else is around $2.63-2.68 a gallon so it sounds like a wash between the money saved in the price of gas versus the mileage gained with "name" brand gas stations.
just run 1 gas for 6 months and see what your averages are each tank then switch to the other and run it for 6 months and see the averages. You should get a pretty good average over a 6 month period to say whether or not it is the fuel.
I used to fill up a WalMart, and once I filled up at Shell. That is when I realized that my engine was louder when idling with WalMart gas. So I stopped getting gas from WalMart. I fill up at Costco and my engine sounds the same if I fill up at Shell or BP. Also BJs has crappy gas like WalMart. So stay away from BJs and WalMart.
