Accidentally drove with my trunk open...

So yesterday I was picking up a friend and I thought he was going to need trunk space to put his stuff in, but he decided just to keep his stuff with him in the front seat. I had already popped the trunk before he got in and forgot about it being open. During the drive, it really felt like the power was greatly decreased. I would floor it in 2nd gear and it just would not seem like it was accelerating as quickly as usual.

Anyways, when we got to where we were going, it hit me that the trunk had been open the entire time and it got me thinking, could the trunk being open possibly reduce the power? I know it sounds weird but maybe when the trunk is open, the car is made to not run at full power so the trunk does not fly open while the car is moving?

It is my only guess as to why the car seemed to not be running at full power.

Thanks!

I doubt their is a power bottleneck when the trunk is open. Possibly wind resistance?

Hmm, I doubt it. The trunk was not vertically open. It was open like it would be right after you hold the trunk button on the key remote. So it was just resting horizontally. And when I drive I check my mirrors often, so I would have seen the trunk if it was going up and down.

probably aerodynamic drag..

anyway, do you not ever look in the rear view mirror when you drive? it probably should've been obvious as soon as you started driving that your trunk was open

It is a coupe so the trunk does not literally fly open when you pop the trunk, and I said in a previous post that it was not vertically open. And I also said that I check my mirrors often when I drive.

i only read your original post.. so you're saying that after you closed the trunk later, the power felt like it was back to normal?

I have not had a chance to drive it again since then actually. But when I do I will post what happens. I just wanted to see if there was a possible connection.

It may have been a combination of things affecting the sluggish feeling of your car, of which the trunk being unlatched probably had no contribution to.

If it was hot out that day, that will make your car slower, and the added weight of your passenger and his luggage will definitely make the car accelerate slower. You may even have a bad batch of fuel in the car.

Were you trying to really push the car to show it off to your buddy? If so, then you were probably paying more attention to how fast the car was accelerating than you would if it was just you alone. Those are just a few things to consider.
