i drop to first before i get on the highway sometimes because the ramp by my job is a tight hairpin followed by a 300ft on ramp(measured it on google earth..lol) so sometimes u need to accelerate pretty rapidly, it was more important in my rsx and celica...the g has enough torque to do it in 2nd generally

^ I hope that was a joke.

The words: down, shift, and 1st should never meet each other in a sentence.

There is no reason to ever downshift to first, even on a hill. If you're moving, you don't need it.

1st gear + moving car = burnt clutch.

If you wanna rock that, buy an AT and use manual mode to pretend you know how to drive stick.

you come onto the ramp near a dead stop and sometimes you need first, you wouldn't know about it slushbox boy, its the same as any other gear, as long as you rev match its fine, you just shouldn't be dropping into first for no reason, like as you are rolling through a stop sign

Theres no grinding if you rev it before to not screw up the synchros.

But you have to be going REAL slow, and i am sure this guy does this and needs to probably to get him going before he gets off that off ramp, sounds like fun too hitting redline in first then hitting second on an on ramp!

yeah its a blast sometimes...but sometimes people stop dead on the ramp and dangerous **** starts happening...lol

you can see the northbound ramp is very short and a lot of times you are going under 5 mph because someome slow is in front of you and there is a crap load of traffic you have to merge into before you hit the guard rail

like i said the g usually has enough torque so 1st isnt needed but in my torquely challeged celica gt-s and rsx-s starting in 2nd gear isn't very productive. the celica really wasn't fond of going into first while rolling

If you know how to rev match PROPERLY, down shifting into first should be like down shifting into any other gear.. Just not recommended to use for engine braking in traffic by slipping the clutch out.

This is exactly why you're able to do this with a 370z with no harm. It will perfectly match the revs for you.

Ehh... I don't know what you guys are talking about, I downshift from 2nd to 1st all day everyday at my parking structure. It's unsafe? It's only unsafe and mess up your trans ONLY IF you don't rev match. If you're in second gear and want to shift into first, rev your RPM up to around the RPM where it would be in first from second, and your gear will slight right in no problems. Downshift is only hard when you don't rev match, only yeah and if you don't know how to heel toe. Any opinions are welcome.

It really depends on what RPMs you're at. You hardly ever need to get into first, but there are those times when you're at that perfect speed where you're just too slow for second, but too fast to get into first...

This thread is going downhill backwards faster than a G35 Coupe towing a trailer with a Mack truck on it up a steep hill, on a dirt road covered in snow and ice, with worn bald summer tires, in Alaska in the middle of the winter, in -20 degree temps, with a headwind, at night with 3 passengers and a trunk full of luggage.

Was he telling you to heel and toe? I couldn't read his whole post. He lost me when he was trying to explain how to rev match...
