Tire Debate

As no doubt many of you have begun to replace your OEM stock Michellin Pilot Sports- whith what are you replacing (or planning to replace them) with?
Are you you replacing them with Pilots or is there another brand that you feel is more suitable?
Someone mentioned that for the price, Yokos AVS series was a good tire... any thoughts?

Re: Tire Debate

I'm planning to replace mine with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Only because I don't want to have to switch tires, in the winter, because it doesn't snow all that much here... Just sub 50 degree temperatures.

Re: Tire Debate

I spent a few days researching this and decided to go with Pilot Sports A/S as well. I narrowed it down to the OEM Pilot Sports, Brigstones S0-3s and Yokahama AVS. I went with the PS A/S because it had a tread wear rating of 400 where the others all had a rating of only 200. According to tirerack tha PS A/S is better than the regular PS in ride comfort, road noise and virtually everything else only giving up a little on dry traction. Unfortunately they don't make them in the OEM size so I'll be going to 255/45/18 on the back and 245/40/18 on the front. This should keep the stagger about the same for VDC, but help a lot with the understeer. I think the ultimate tire right now is the Michelin PS2, but it doesn't come in any size I'm intrested in and I think it'll wear faster than the A/S. If it turns out that I only get 20k out of the PS A/S then I'll try the Yokahamas next since they're the only ones I can afford to replace every 20k.

Re: Tire Debate

I was thinking about getting the Continental Conti-Extreme Contacts. They are their top of the line all season tires. But I heard they had problems with flat spotting, which is why I'm leaning towards the Pilot Sport A/S. I heard they were expensive, but everyone said it was money well spent.

Re: Tire Debate

I have a certificate for 4 free bridgestone tires, so S03's will be my next set of tires. But for the future, I've been taking a look at the Michelin PS2's. There are some interesting design concepts and it is apparently used on some high end high performance cars. It's a bit pricey though.

Re: Tire Debate

I like the Yoko AVS sports. I had a set on my GTP and they really seemed to outperform my Eagles, so based on that experience alone I'd be willing to try them out on my G. Not that there is anything wrong with the pilot sports performance except for the road noise. Luckily I live in Vegas and snow is a non-issue.

Re: Tire Debate

Yeah, I put a set on my 330, they seem like pretty good tires, REALLY quiet, but I have only logged 1000 miles so far. The problem I am finding for the G is size availability?

'03 G Coupe, 6 speed, Bose, Nav, Pearl White, Black leather, 350Z airbox, more MODS to come!

Re: Tire Debate

I had Toyo T1-S on my Volvo C70 and they were fantastic... only problem was I put them on a few weeks too early and had to drive in the snow one morning...not a pretty situation. I moved about 5 feet then turned around and went home. GREAT summer tire though.

Re: Tire Debate

Please don't use the " Oh my brand new brand X tires are so much better than the worn out down to the wear bars Pilot Sports"

Only valid to compare tires with equal mileage, tread depth age, since manufacture, etc.

Of Course most brand new tires are usually better than hard 10-20,000 mile tires.

I have been fooled so many times thinking wow [a good tire at a cheaper price], till the 8,000 mile mark comes up. And my reference tire is a few notches lower than the Pilot Sports.........the Pilot H4.

Some real junk sells in the 215/225 x 15" & 16" and 17" sizes.
At T3 we see almost every brand of tire in 15,16, 17, many 18" sizes and the trash pile [removed bad tires] tells the tale of how they fail.

Re: Tire Debate

With equal mileage, would you consider the Pilots to be the best overall tire for the coupe?
