545i vs G35 reliability

I'm on the verge of buying a used car. Right now I'm torn between a 545i or G35 coupe.

The only thing holding me back on the 545i is the 'stigma' of used BMW reliability and electrical problems. It's enough to make me go towards a G35...

However... I'm reading that EVERY 6 speed coupe built after 2005 has this oil consumption problem - I've also read at least one thread on another forum where someone had their engine replacement denied due to 'non-Infiniti/Nissan oil changes'...

This has me more than a bit concerned.. Since I'm buying used, many of them are nearing the end of the warranty period. Not only that, but from what I understand Nissan has no idea what caused all of these oil consumption issues which makes me think the new motors will eventually do the same thing.

Thoughts? Has anyone bought a used G35 and gotten a warranty replacement motor? Has anyone had more oil consumption issues on a 'new' motor?

Im pretty sure theres only a few out there with oil comsumption problems, its not like it will be a 50/50 chance. I say personally go with the g35, if you get one with low clicks you should have nothing to worry about.

Lied to?

From what I've read Infiniti never figured out what caused the oil consumption problems.. If they don't know what caused it, then how did they fix it?

So it's basically a gamble as to whether or not you get one with problems?

i drive a g35 and i was on the same boat as u,
If u care for sport look 2 door coupe and 545i is not on the same level.
Ive driven my friends 545i alot, We even ran them, G35 always jumps on it even tho 545 is a v8.

but the drive u get in the 545 is not comparable to g35. G is squeky, poor quality next to german 545, When u close the door in the bmws u feel like ur in ur own world. In g35s sometimes i have to check to see if i have any windows open cause it absorbs so much sound from the outside.

545i on 6mt does better damage and feel sportier.

I'd pick the 545 if i had to pick again. cause 5 series is on the level of m45/ when G is on the entry level...

ive heard japanese cars are more reliable than germans, but then again thats what ive heard. if your more of a sports car guy and dont need to carry that much, a g35 is fine, IMO g35 looks much nicer then the 545, 545 is more of a bigger sedan more spacious and luxurious, but if your young have no kids maybe a wife or GF then go for the G, but if you have a family and plan on taking your family around then the 545.

Im reffering to this part:
However... I'm reading that EVERY 6 speed coupe built after 2005 has this oil consumption problem - I've also read at least one thread on another forum where someone had their engine replacement denied due to 'non-Infiniti/Nissan oil changes'...
that is completely untrue..

If I could afford a bmw I would get a 335i or an m3 if I had the extra coin. I don't need a sedan right now because I don't have any kids or ride with more than one other person in my car(my fiance) at any given time

agreeed on the 335i, only thing is that there resale values are really high. i would take a 335i over a g35 sedan, but idk on the coupe.

I won't even consider a 335 due to the reliability issues they've had. If I was going to get a smaller BMW it'd be a 330Ci, but I'd rather have a G35 than the 330.

I'm curious about the oil consumption issue - at least one poster is claiming that not all of the cars are affected.. I don't understand how this can be the case unless it has to do with break in or something.

Also, has anyone purchased a used G35 and needed to do the warranty claim? Again, my concern is dropping 20k+ on a vehicle and then having issues dealing with warranty service.

I was on the fence also between an '06 330Ci, '06 M3, or '07 G35 coupe.

I took the G35 since it looks way better and more aggressive. Japanese reliability was a big part too. The Bimmers looked more plain and ordinary the more I compared.. even tho the old M3 can eat G35's for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Reduce your risk by purchasing CPO also.

No matter how great the car is, if previous owner dogged it out, it will break first.

I agree with the noise from outside, its just horrible on g35. you hear winds like the window is open or something compared to german cars. on my bmw 850i, you hear nothing but your music.

Both cars are great, but it the final decision is up on you. Test drive both of them, and i'm pretty sure your decision will be relevant.
