Question Winter Tires + Tire Pressure Sensor Questions

I just put a deposit down on my 2006 G35 Coupe today. (very excited)

I am going to be picking it up from North Carolina and bringing it back to the very cold and soon to be snowy Michigan.

I need to purchase snow tires to be able to get around this winter. The car comes with 19" rims which I have found snow tires for but im not sure how the performance would be and I'm not sure I want to expose the nice rims to the winter salt.

What do most of you G35 guys do in the winter? Buy a set of 17" rims?

If I but new rims I have heard that I need to buy and program new tire sensors?

If anyone could help me with this I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Matt Keys

Contratulations and Welcome to Driver Matt! Buying rims for your winter tires is probably a good idea. You have two choices with the TPS, put up with the sound/warning on your dash for a few months or you can swap them into your winter setup and no they don't need to be reprogramed. They install just like valve stems, yea that easy....

What would a set of OEM 17 rims and snow tires run? Is there any sense in buying a new set of tire pressure monitors to go with them? Ive heard some people using the blizzaks, are they the choice of most people here?

You can run without the TPMS without any errors (AFAIK). My car has 19" OEM's with no tire sensors and it will only turn on the light after about 30~miles of driving. (04 coupe tho)

I run summers without TPMS with no problems, you jsut get a little air pressure light on your dash. You learn to ignore it.

Okay so it seems the TPM is just a matter of preference if you want that feature working and if you care about the light on the dash.

Ignoring that for a moment, can anybody recommend which wheels and tires I should be looking at? I am hoping to get out of the whole deal for around $1000 or maybe $1500 max. Is that possible?

Better tires available for 17 inch rims. 18+ is mostly sport tires which are garbage.

If you have brembos 17's need to be offset correctly. There are some DIYs on here for 17 inch fitments on Brembos.

I run Dunlop Winter Sport M3/3D on 17" ASA JH3 wheels and have been very happy with them for four+ winters. Great winter performance, and very good dry road handling too for a winter tire. Original setup cost me about $1,100 or so.

How much does it effect the speedometer on the G35 going from 19 inch low profiles to 17 inch winter tires?

Okay so I called up Discount Tire near me to see what they had for my car, they offered Bridgestone Blizzak WS60, Hankook Icebear W300, and Hankook Winter iPike W409 tires. I am buying today after work, any advice between those choices? Or perhaps the M3's are better than all of them and I should look around for those?

Feedback soon please!

the W409's are listed on discount tires site as "better" while the Blizzaks are listed as "best" and the W409s are cheaper.

Do you think that the W409s are actually better than the blizzaks WS60s, or do you think they are just better than the w300s?
