Hey guys, I just bought a G35 coupe and its time to fill up. The note on the gas tank says premium only, but a salesman said I could just use regular unleaded. I'm tempted just to go with middle grade. What do you guys think?

Salesman is an absolute moron. The VQ is highly tuned with high compression meaning it has very specific needs. A lower grade fuel = early detonation causing pinging which is very very bad for the engine. Sure the computer can retard the timing (which significantly lowers hp output) but by then the engine is already under stress. Basically, tell the salesperson he/she is an idiot and put in premium.

Well, you follow the directions they both gave you....Put premium in your car, as your car says to do, and pour the regular down the salesmans throat for even suggesting such an idea. Then all are happy.

I think part of this question stems from recent articles, etc., that advise people not to use super because it would be a waste of $. In most cases, this is true. Most cars are designed to operate on 87 test. Going to an 89 or 91-93 (depending on location) won't give those cars any (or negligible) performance gains.

In this case, the coupe was designed to run on super. It needs that grade to get the optimum level of performance out of the engine. Going to a lower grade will undoubtedly hurt performance (to what degree, I couldn't tell you) but it probably won't hurt the car to use mid grade if you're not tracking the car.

I'm sure your premium is probably cheaper than what we pay for regular. On top of that, you can actually probably GET 92-93 octane which is impossible to find here (even our 91 is more like 90.5). So the point of my story is, count your blessings and put premium in it!

Again, thanks for all the advice. I just wanted to know if I would be able to put middle grade in my car without hurting it. It seems as though the majority says use premium therefore I will. I don't race my car or anything like that, its just my everyday go to work and run errands car. I will go with premium though, I sure as hell don't want to screw up the engine.

Good choice bro.....It's what the manufacturer recommends.
In a pinch, and if premium is not available, you could burn something else for a short time, but only until you can fill with the 'good' stuff.

All owners should read their manual at least once. Besides telling you what gas to use and how often you can use a lower grade gas, it also tells you a few things that aren't obvious:

1. how to lower the back seat
2. how to open the gas lid
3. how to lower your windows using the remote
4. how to raise your windows using your key

wow funny this came up. my brother got a 91 300zx auto and used. this was also the first sports car we owned. so everytime he got gas he would get regular. so about 4 or 5 years later we decide to sell it cuz he wants something bigger to go to college. we took it to carmax to get an appraisal and they told us that it was only running on 4 cylinders. its a 3.0 V6 that crapped out into something like a 3.0 V4. so we figured it was cuz of the wrong octane. o and we bought it for 13k n sold it for about 4k.

I've read the manual and I cant remember reading anything as to how to lower the back seat on my Coupe, or how to raise windows using the key. I know how to lower the windows using the key, but not how to raice them.
