I did a search for it in the tech area. No recent writeup or direction of any sort. Can anyone point me in the direction to take off the lid.?

The technical manuals have the info you need, I spent a lot of time looking for the same info (or actually removing the interior "box" that would have been my nav) and found links to the manuals over on nicoclub. I saved the interior one but I'll see if I can't find you a link...

you should download the entire service manual ..
