Z-Tube = loss of low end torque?

Just had to ask. With all this talk about CAIs and intakes reducing low end torque/acceleration but increasing it at higher RPMs, just wondering if it's the same with the Z-Tube.

Well? Is it?

That's what i thought. But i've red people saying how they feel that their aftermarket/non-stock intakes are creating a loss of power at lower RPMs but more power at higher.

Speculation based on he said she said. Actual measurements I've seen indicate that all the aftermarket intakes offer no significant difference on the low end and between 0-3 HP on the top end.

Basing my opinion on the data on the FL and CA dyno days, Dave Os threads regarding intake temp measurements, mathematics and fact offered by Q45Tech, and my own measurements with a G Tech Comp in controlled conditions.

Re: Z-Tube = loss of low end torque?

One consideration is that oem use intake tuning prior to TB to try to improve cruise fuel economy at low rpms. The need to boost marketing HP has limited this effectiveness.

But you never know if your changes might reduce mpg in the 1500-2400 rpm light load range. Some of the tuned effects of sound suppression.

Now plenum [hemholtz resonant tuning] and runner inside diameters are a special case where enlarging them will decrease the very low end torque because the pivot point [think seesaw torque peak rpm] will shift higher.

I think that's not possible based on my simple observation. The z tube is the same diameter and shape as the stock tube, except there are no sound baffles on the z tube. I don't think the z tube does anything except allow sound to escape from the intake.

Re: Z-Tube = loss of low end torque?

Someone posted a dyno sheet before and after z-tube, and there was a drop in rpm<3000, but an increase after that. I believe the baffles in the stock pipe cause more turbulance in the air, giving a better mix of air and fuel in the cylinder, hence more low end torque. As the rpm's pick up however, the faster rate and increased volume of the air allowed by the smooth z-tube increases power and torque. I thought a bit about this before buying a z-tube, since I usually drvie with not alot of rpm, but if your getting on it... your rpm's will easily be above 3000. And the sound... is sweet.
