Re: STOCK NAVI SUCKS!!!!

the navi does NOT suck. it also has saved my *** a lot of times. it's worth every penny.

and the distance to empty feature is so useful. I don't even look at the gas gauge anymore.

I think the majority of you guys are agreeing to the fact that navigation in general "rocks". Not to start a flame war...but i'd have to say...Nissan's and Infiniti's navigation...when compared to most other navigations out there does not "rock". I would elaborate more on that...but i just wanted to briefly state my opinion.

Re: STOCK NAVI SUCKS!!!!

I got into my car today and my NAV gave me a "its too hot" error. I closed it down, then when i tried to open it, it had locked itself in. After about 10 minutes though it opened. Probably protecting itself...awww how cute

Re: STOCK NAVI SUCKS!!!!

I can't really say that my Nav has saved me per se, but it is certainly pretty convenient when travelling to new areas. One time though, it said there were no numbers listed for the street I was looking for an address on. And today, it did place my car in the middle of a block whe I was actually on a street. It was rather strange, but overall it's nice to have. And it also had a hard time finding addresses in Vegas, but once out there, it seemed to have all the streets listed...hmm?

That's why I like it-- I just moved to Vegas last year, and I travel a lot by car. It's been more than invaluable in aiding my learning of this city...

Re: STOCK NAVI SUCKS!!!!

This reminds me of a problem with the earlier build XBOX that a lot of people were having problems with (disc read errors and such). The problem was the brand of DVD-ROM drive they used was buggy (Thompson). They've since discontinued installing those drives in their XBOX and used two different manufacturers (Samsung and Toshiba I believe). Microsoft initially denied any problems, but later on offered free replacements of the DVD-ROM drive for people with the Thompson drive XBOX's.

Re: STOCK NAVI SUCKS!!!!

Well I thought I'd chime in here ...

I love my NAV and I hate it at the same time. I was having the same problems with "Disc Error" so I brought it in to the dealer. Dealer determined the DVD-ROM unit needed to be replaced. That was almost 2 months ago ... order went in 7/10/2004 and has been on backorder since ... nothing Nissan/Infiniti can do about that except go with a different manufacturer for the DVD-ROM unit that is not going to be "backordered" for 2 months.

Now the funny thing is that the NAV had not worked for nearly a week up until the time I took it to the dealer. I brought it in, left it running so I could show the service writer what's happening just in case it decided to fix itself when I got there . They checked it out, ordered the new part and I was on my way. When I drove away from the dealer ... it started working again ... lol ... after a week of not working!

It's been sporatic since then, usually not working when I really need it to. I've lived in Chicago all my life and I can find my way just about anywhere ... but I wanted the NAV regardless.

Overall the features that the NAV include are invaluable ... fuel economy, trip meter, etc. I especially love the 3-D "birdview" instead of the old 2-D overhead view. The part that really bothers me is entering addresses with the clumsy joystick. I like the way it types ahead only offering letters that are possible but the joystick movements must be VERY precise for the cursor to move where you want it to. All this while sitting still in the car because I have not done the wheel sensor mod. Some or most of you may disagree but I just do not find the movements of the joystick natural.

I guess that's really my only complaint is the joystick ... I like the fact that there isn't fingerprints all over the screen because I can't stand that on my computer screen.

I'm seriously considering trading my '04 G for an '05 and not getting the stock NAV and instead waiting a little while and do a Pioneer Avic-N1 install. The only thing I would be losing is the built in fuel economy but I would be gaining DVD movie viewing, a touch screen (yeah yeah), mp3 (although '05 is getting this) and a bunch more.

stock navi leaves a lot to be desired for

I agree with MegaBB6Turbo. Compared to nothing, our stock navi is naturally quite valuable. However, being a software enginner, I find it lacking in many functions (in a very obvious way to me). Here are my complaints:

1. Can't search POI by distance. You can do it by Category, but the available categories are few and far in between (no pun intended). Too many times, I have wanted to know where's the nearest Jamba Juice!

2. Only one route displayed. Very often, there would be other route(s) that are only slightly slower (to navi), but much more preferrable (quicker in reality). How many times has it asked u for a u-turn in half a block, and for some reason you missed it, and it gives you a totally new & different route? I wish it would provide a list of choices and let you pick, esp if you're in "semi-familiar" areas.

3. Doesn't let you do sh_t when driving. But everybody knows that.

4. Stop putting the car in the middle of the screen! (2D mode.) I don't need to know what streets are behind me. In head-up mode, the car should be closer to the bottom of the screen so you can see more of what's ahead. In north-up mode, it should move around and near the edges.

5. The center of the car should be at the center (i.e. centroid) of the arrow, not its tip!

6. This is something I've seen in an old Acura. When you zoom out enough, it should automatically go to north-up mode. (You can probably tell by now I don't use the 3D mode.) By the way, the voice of that Acura navi also has a much sweeter and cuter voice. Another reason why I don't use the voice either.

I suspect that some of these may be due to patent issues. Coz they just seem too obvious to slip the (brilliant?) minds of the engineers at Infiniti/Nissan.

All that said, I still wouldn't want to live without navi

Re: STOCK NAVI SUCKS!!!!

Sorry you've had the problem, and please let us know when it's fixed and how it's working. One reason I ended my lease early a few weeks ago was to go ahead and get a coupe with the navi rather than wait til the end of the lease. I should have gotten it to start with. It's a whole lot better than the stand-alone units as far as convenience goes, and after 3 weeks mine is still working fine, knock on wood. The other day I had to do an appraisal and just keyed in the address and went right to it. In the old days the old map would have come out.

Re: STOCK NAVI SUCKS!!!!

The Nav has been invaluable, but it is ergonomically inferior to the 1st generation Honda touch-screen system, not to mention the 2nd generation blue-tooth configured system. Nissan needs to dump that stupid video arcade stick.
