05 Not Just an ECU Upgrade S1 Engine
05 Not Just an ECU Upgrade S1 Engine
Road and Track September 2004
"Nissan's Secret Z"
Residing there is Nismo's S1 engine that produces an impressive 300 bhp at 6400 rpm and 268 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400.
The S1 is basically a pumped-up version of the 3.5-liter V-6 powerplant in the 350Z. Nismo engineers took apart the base VQ V-6 and rebuilt it using more than a dozen new parts — including new camshafts, revised ECU, freer-flowing intake and exhaust, heavy-duty clutch, a lightweight flywheel and reinforced valve springs and connecting rods. The result is a powerplant that's virtually race-ready, with excellent power delivery and throttle response throughout the rev range. It has a better top end, too, with the engine's redline extended from 6600 to 7200 rpm.
It's clear that the S1 is a different breed from the stock VQ as soon as it comes to life. It emits a wonderful sound that is reminiscent of something from Italy, inviting you to continually tap the throttle pedal. Once you're ready to go, the car launches with the rear 275/35ZR-19 Bridgestone Potenza tires spewing white smoke as the car shoots forward.

Re: 05 Not Just an ECU Upgrade S1 Engine
So are you suggesting the new engine is the nismo S1 upgraded engine? Or they basically did the same upgrades to the G's engine and just didn't bother marketing it as a "tuner"?

working link
i didn't read anything on that article saying it's gonna be an '05 Z. it may be just a project car or something...

"Slowly and gingerly creeping beyond the 75 lb/ft per liter normal street engine limit ~~76.6 lb/ft per liter."
WOW!
I guess all of those STI and AMG motors will be grenading any minute.......what with 120hp/litre and 86.2hp/litre respectively.

It's like hanging out with granma worry wart around here all the time. Tech it seems is prob not working much as a tech or he wouldn't post all day right? He seems to be a corporate noodge who exists to spin mods as bad so they can cut down on warranty litigation or something. He appears to be brilliant but never answers questions - just blows people away with theory and calculations that have little relavance to the question. Like asking a nasa engineer to explain gravity in 1 sentence or less - watch them spin!
And whatever happened to Infinittech. He's done spewing about pulleys causing cars to grenade but has he re-incarnated?

"If you want 7200 rpm, just get an ECU by TS"
It was stated on another forum that you need reinforced valve springs to reliably raise the redline. Buying the TS ECU and going beyond the factory redline may result in engine damage. This is why the S1 engine comes with stronger valve springs along with the ECU and cams, etc.
Right now this is purely speculation about the S1 engine in the 05 coupe. Let's just wait until the real specs come out before we [censored] our pants.

Isn't it readily accepted that the VQ as is can go to 7700 no problemo? 7200 is easy for this motor.

Yeah thats what I've heard as well. And the motor lasted 15 minutes straight at 8100 RPMS while testing.

Re: 05 Not Just an ECU Upgrade S1 Engine
The NISMO S-Tune Skyline 350GT also is equiped with the "S1" engine. The mods you listed are also listed on the NISMO S-Tune 350GT, perhaps with the exception of the flywheel/clutch mods you mentioned. As I indicated in another post, the road-test editor said it felt like more than an 18HP increase.
The question is, is the "S1" engine simply the NISMO designation for the mods they add. What I mean is we really have no indication that the "S1" engine designation will be anything more than NISMO's term for their modified VQ.
As I also wondered in that other thread, would Nissan really make all of these changes for the '05 coupe? Could 18HP and a higher redline be gained from the ECM alone?
I really hope that the '05 6MT is equiped with the sexy NISMO cams and those other significant internal mods, but it just seems like a lot for a manufacturer to offer. Here's to praying that Nissan uses the "S1" engine, as it is in the NISMO S-Tune 350GT, in the '05 6MT Coupe!
'05 IP(or ?) 6MT... ...Never too soon to think about modifications!!

I read that article in print a month ago. I believe the car was built to meet homologation requirements for a Japanese racing series, kinda like a Japanese NASCAR.

Isn't my fault you don't have a Master of Science degree in Automotive Engineering.
"Q45tech" doesn't stand for technican, [but technical] for which I could never afford to take the pay cut. The best techs at dealerships usually make around $60-70k in Atlanta.
Don't confuse normally aspirated engines with super/turbo charged engines........if you change the air pressure you can make any amount of torque you want but at sealevel [and no hurricane] you are limited by compression ratio and bore diameter.........one of the first things you learn in Theory of Combustion Engines" in college.
The following min course with java applets might help you understand.
http://www.engr.colostate.edu/~allan...e1/page1f.html
I'm not discussing "Strength of Materials" as with enough money you can build almost anything, just the the Nissan V6 is a budget constrained engine like all mass produced engines.
The prices of AMG twin turbos do not seem so constrained.
Actually most current non supercharged racing engines [indy, cart, etc] have achieved 94-95 lb/ft per liter on METHANOL and much higher compression.....just that it requires non emissions, open exhausts, and 8.10, or 12 individual throttle bodies to reduce the 6.8% [normal production engines] intake pumping losses thru plenum/tb, etc.
Don't work for Nissan or any vehicle or parts manufacturer, too boring.
