04 Coupe...just bought...service engine soon

Just bought an 04 coupe with 39.9k miles, it now has about 40.4k miles, i bought it used out of state, drove it 6 hours home never had any issues. Today it died at idle and service engine soon light came on, i turned it off and restarted it and drove it home with 0 issues. Do i have to go to the dealer to have the code pulled? I was planning on getting the oil and transmision flush done next week. Also, is it just mine or do all of the oil dip-sticks bent...oddly shapped and mission impossible to remove/check/replace? I have a feeling mine is bent and jacked up from the previous owner, any help would be much appreciated

No the dipstick is wierd, if you hear clacking sounds like you can hear your valves, replace your oil asap.

check your oil. the oil dipsticks are funky to begin with. the light is more likely a vtc code if you're low on oil. or get it checked at autozone or where ever and let us know what code is throws.

The dipsticks are just frigged up in our cars by design. Try to use your other hand and put it on the end of the dipstick where it is going into the motor and guide it in with that hand while using the other hand to push by the handle.

The only way to find that Check Engine code and see what the problem is is to have someone with an OBD-II scanner hook up to your car and check it. Auto Zone does it for free, or you can just go have a friend with an OBD-II scan tool do it for you.... it takes about 20 seconds to do.
