short block replacement for oil burning problem?
As many of you know, some VQ engines in the g35 and the z are experiencing oil consumption problems. My car ran out of oil while I was driving - what a sickening noise that was. The car had less than 10k on it when this happend.
A test was performed. The dealership determined that I burned 34 oz of oil in under 1,100 mostly highway miles.
A Consumer Affairs rep. told me that Nissan was replacing both engines and cars for oil consumption problems. But today the dealership service manager told me that the Nissan Tech Department recomended short block replacement for my car. What do you think? This is the first time I've hear of short block replacement as a fix for this problem.
My initial thoughts are these. Nissan should assume my head was damaged when the car ran out of oil prematurely due to the oil consumption problem; this happened within the recommended oil change period. Therefore, at a minumum the entire engine should be replaced. Also, a customer shouldn't be asked accept a torn out and torn up engine in a new car.
I'm optimisitic that consumer affairs will do the right thing when I talk with them - but this is guarded optimism. It would be helpful to have your feedback and any recommendations before having this conversation.
