Broken Belt

I was just crusing along tonight and a belt broke. Battery and Brake lights came on and engine was still running I nursed it close to home. Car ran normal until i came up to a hill, there was no throttle response while in gear I coasted to a parking lot and in neutral the car will rev. Kind of curious to know if anybody has encountered this and might be able to point in the right direction

That's a new one to me, isn't that something you should have been able to hear if it was tearing up your drive belt?
