Good start with the AT? Manumatic use?
Good start with the AT? Manumatic use?
I noticed people with the AT say before they take off, they're about in the 2000 RPMs...what's the method? Put it in neutral and rev, then switch down and then to the right to get to manumatic and hit the pedal? Just curious if it was like that. THanks!
Re: Good start with the AT? Manumatic use?
If you do that, you pretty much toast your transmission. Its called a neutral dump and that is the surest way of frying your transmission. What you are thinking is called torque braking. Left foot on brake, rev car to 2000 rpm, then let go of brake. That is the best way to launch autos.

I've seen and heard of people revving their car while in the PARKED or NEUTRAL position... is this what you're talking about w/ frying the transmission?
I haven't raced a day in my life, nor done any of this, but am just curious so that I don't do it one day :-D

Yes it is. Revving the car in park or neutral and throwing it in drive is very bad for the transmission. Like EZZ said Left foot on brake, rev car to 2000 rpm, then let go of brake. That is the best way to launch autos.

Sorry to side track, but what about revving it in PARKED mode, just revving it and not throwing it into drive? I think I've seen that done in movies (Gone in 60 seconds) ahha, yes I know movies aren't always real... but am curious... and er... um... I might have done it before too
I remember revving it in parked just to hear if the Ztube was working before taking it for a spin (I know I know, no need to give me a lecture on it)... =(
Am curious if my TRNS is messed up now or if there was a tolerance level and my car is okay cuz I didn't bust it then and there? Car runs fine as of now...

your car should be fine if you were just revving it and not dropping it into drive. but next time you're looking just to rev, pop it in neutral, but make sure the rpms are back down before putting it back into drive.

Wait, brake torquing is revving the engine with your foot on the brake. The car is already in Drive, and yes that's bad for the tranny. I've only done that at the track and the rpms never got nearly close to 2k. I didn't know that revving the car while in P was just as harmful, we all have done it.

revving the car in P isnt harmful. What he meant was revving it in P and dumping it into drive would be a huge strain on the transmission. Revving up and going back to idle then putting it in Drive shouldnt be a problem.
Re: Good start with the AT? Manumatic use?
Reving the engine isn't bad. Reving and then shifting into drive from neutral (or park) when rpms are high, is very bad for the tranny (aka...neutral dumps).

Re: Good start with the AT? Manumatic use?
Revving in drive, with your foot on the brake, just heats up your tranny fluid. Basically the Torque Converter Clutch absorbs the energy and converts it into heat. (This is why you should get a tranny cooler if you do this frequently, as heat is a tranny's #1 enemy) Brake torquing is basically pre-loading the tranny, for better take-offs.
A Neutral dump is bad for a tranny, because you are basically slamming the tranny into gear. You can break gears and snap drive shafts that way.
