someone please explain clutch chatter
someone please explain clutch chatter
I have searched and read about ten different posts on premature wear on the clutch and clutch chatter etc. trying to educate myself to determine if I have an issue or not or if there is something I can do to avoid an issue. I have an 07 6mt coupe with 23K miles. Seems to shift fine and no clutch slippage that I can tell and I do get on it from time to time. However, very often when I put the car in neutral and apply emergency brake to get out to get the mail at the end of my long driveway the clutch is chattering continuously fairly loudly. Can someone please explain why it does this and if it is a sign that I should do something like have something adjusted etc. I am okay with it being normal but if there is something I should do I would like to know. Thanks everyone for your help.
it sounds like u might have some typt of drivetrain issue
since u got 23k on it u should go the dealership and see if it is covered under warranty
If they say its the clutch assembly (clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, release bearing and pilot bearing) needs to be replace, and its not under warranty. It is if the clutch release bearing, pilot bearing is causing it. Good news if it is the tranny it is covered under warranty
try to find out.

Our cars just have a natural chatter when in neutral and running....my car has been doing it since day 1...42k miles later it still does and there is no issues. If you feel your clutch is slipping then by all means get it check out by the dealer if it's under warranty and go from there. But if it's grabbing fine and you don't think there are any issues...the chatter is nomral.
PS if you think it's bad with the stock clutch, you should hear it with an after market lightened flywheel. Our gearboxes just sound like a damn 1983 f150 at idle...bad design.

I purchased my G35 brand new with 7 miles on it (2004 6MT) It has had this "chatter" sound since new. Its a bit louder now, but the car runs and shifts like a champ (50,000). People have been complaining about it since day #1. It actually sounds like a F550 drive-train...

Clutch rattle (sound) is different than clutch chatter (friction disc in clutch grabbing and releasing repeatedly when engaging the clutch). The sound (rattle) is very common in these cars and usually not a problem.
I know this is an old post but I figure why not. I have an 04 G35 coupe 6MT with just under 71,000 miles on it. When the car is in neutral I can hear a noise, almost like grinding or vibrating, but then when I engage the clutch the noise goes away. I have read about it maybe being an aftermarket lightweight flywheel but my clutch pedal is very heavy also. (the heaviest clutch that I have ever felt anyway). But then I have also heard that the sound is just normal for G's... Does anyone think that it might be a bad clutch/flywheel? Or am I just being paranoid? Please help!
I wouldn't think a stock clutch would give you that much chatter. It is usually seen with a stiffer clutch/ lighter flywheel. I would make sure to keep an eye on it, and possibly get it checked out. Especially if it gets worse.
