Burning Oil Solution.....

I am not sure have this idea been mentioned before, but for those who has the oil comsumption issues have you guys ever tried using a thicker oil. Something like 10w-40 or even 20w-50? I would think that the oil comsumption be a little less if the oil was thicker. Just a suggestion.

engines should burn very little oil across the board, infiniti replaces engines with the exact same engines that burn oil High weight oil will make the engine work harder and will increase mpg slightly.

The problem with OC is poor quality piston rings, thicker oil isn't the solution. I can only imagine how much $ these garbage rings have cost Nissan, and yet they have never come forward and stated exactly what the issue was or where they were manufactured....to my knowledge.

On older cars with worn piston rings, using a thicker oil will actually help raise the compression a bit. If oil is being burnt due to the piston rings, I think this would help.

Using a thicker oil than needed may decrease the mpg very slightly depending on the clearances. Usually cars with 100k+ should not have any problems with this unless the vescosity is in the extreme compared to manufacturers recommendation.

+1. nissan did come through and tell us technicians directly about the rings. they just havent made it public to the consumer. cheaper to keep it under wraps and just replace them as people come in.

My car was consuming 3 quarts/1000 miles on 5w30 oil. I switched to 10w40 and my car is burning significantly less than before.

I don't suppose they mentioned where the rings were manufactured....China or Korea?

i dont recall them mentioning the origin of the rings but they did state the obvious, that the rings were manufactured with insufficient materials. uhhh...

Umm the problem was they used the SAME 03 non-rev-up piston rings on the Rev-up motors. Increasing the revs on the 05 rev-up w/o upgrading the rods/rings.. How stupid are they?

Pretty damn stupid.

Gary C is 100% correct. The oild burning problem is especially prominent in the high rev engines with manual transmissions. I have an 06 g35 and my block was replaced at the dealership at 46000 miles for free because it was under infinity warranty which is 4 years. What happens is when you have bad or worn out piston rings, the oil gets into your combustion chamber and burns off. One of the reasons he piston rings are there is so the oil does not get in the combustion chamber and your intake system.

its been happening for about 8-9 years now. the altima 2.5 motors have the same issue. i couldnt tell you how many long blocks ive done under warranty. half the time, we didnt even have to call for approval. they would just give us the go ahead

as far back as the 02 altimas with the 2.5l motors. nothing has gone public
b/c not all are affected. typical corporation trying to save every penny, they just fix em as they come in
