Minus 10lb of torque on new 2005 G35!
Minus 10lb of torque on new 2005 G35!
I read the specifications for the new 2005 G35 Sport Coupe 6MT, and saw that while the horsepower increased from 280 to 298, the torque decreased from 270lb/ft to 260lb/ft. What's up with that? I think I would rather have 10lb/ft more torque than 18 horsepower....
Take a look at www.infinitinews.com (click the infiniti link at the top of the page, then click on G35 Sport Coupe, followed by a click on the right side of the page for specifications)

Not only that. The 298hp max horsepower is at 6,400rpm but max torque is still available at 4,800rpm, just 10 pound feet less torque. Also, the G35 Coupe 6MT has a 7,000rpm redline now...awesome!!
Don't worry about the lost torque. Torque is more about what you feel and horsepower is more about the actual acceleration.

I'm a big fan of the torque. The last thing I want the G to turn into is a high rev dependant ride like the S2000. No thanks!

There is no horsepower without torque. Torque is rotational force. It does the work. Horsepower is a measurement of torque over a period of time. If your displacement stays the same, your torque will hit a high limit, whereas if you can spin the engine to a higher RPM, you can increase the horsepower. Torque gets you off the line, and horsepower keeps you moving.
Simplified, but fairly accurate.

Here is a conversion for torque to hp in the mid range powerband.
270 ft/lbs of torque at 4800 RPM = 247 hp @ 4800 RPM
260 ft/lbs of torque at 4800 RPM = 238 hp @ 4800 RPM
Not a huge difference but the 05's unless there is signifigant weight reduction in the 19inch forged wheels will have a hard time with the 03-04's off the line unless it's power band has been flattened throughout the RPM range.

im more intrested to see how the power will retain after max hp has been achiveved. As for our current models, after max hp hits anything after gives up a dramatic drop i believe.

Within reason torque and HP are just two ends of a seesaw with the pivot at 5252 rpm..
I personally like to drive a car with more torque than HP [or at least equal] especially an automatic but with the 6 speed you can compensate somewhat.
85HP per liter [298HP] is getting pretty high strung as we use to say............that would be like the new Corvette having 480 instead of 400 from the 5.65 liters.
The real question will be - does this tuning decrease low rpm highway cruising MPG with AC on. If the torque went down at 4800 it must have really went down at 2400!

I am coming ot of an E46 M3 to the 2005 G35 6MT. The M3 has 262 ft. lb.of torque and the 05 6MT has 260. What is the complaint? The rear tires were wasted on the M3 at anything over 1800 RPM launch. How much torque do you want, and what are you going to do with it?
