Fuel Gauge Reading

I think there might be something off with my fuel gauge. It won't read full, closest it comes is a quarter tank and the E light comes on early it seems. I used to get the light with 3 gallons left and now it seems like it's 5-6 in the tank when the light comes on. Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: Fuel Gauge Reading

I had a similar problem. I took my car in for service because the gauge would only read 3/4 to 7/8 of a tank, it never read full. Plus, when it was just below 1/4 a tank, it would only take 13 gallons of gas, not the 15-16 I had come to expect after over a year of ownership. Infiniti replaced the gas gauge sending unit and everything’s fine now.

Re: Fuel Gauge Reading

To this day my gas gauge needle will not go past the top line on my gauge. The other day I had a loaner and it was past the mark on the gauge.

But It seems to be accurate, the Low fuel light goes on when I have about 4-5 gallons left.

Re: Fuel Gauge Reading

GR8TG35, the longer version of my story is that my gauge read exactly like yours for the first year that I owned my car. Basically the car never read full, but the math worked when I filled my car up, so I didn’t worry about it. Then about 6 months ago something changed and my gauge wouldn’t even fill up to 7/8 full I had come to expect and instead of putting 15gal in when it was just under ¼ full, it would shut off around 13 gal. That’s when I decided that something was wrong and I took it in--just a heads up in case that happens to you.

Re: Fuel Gauge Reading

I noticed the same thing..It actually started when I starting using Shell Gas - I went back to Mobil and the problem seems to have rectified itself.

Re: Fuel Gauge Reading

Just last week I noticed mine doing the same thing after filling up at a Shell. It repeated he short fill about 2hrs ago at a Circle K, but I don't know what gas that one was pumping for sure. Might be Conoco Phillips. I'm due in for service next week, I'll add this to the list.

Re: Fuel Gauge Reading

Weird. I had the same problem with the gague only reading ~7/8 when full, but I always filled up at BP. I also experienced the darn car not wanting to allow me to pump gas. The pump would keep shutting off at about 1/2 of a tank. I tried waiting for 1 minute, turning the handle upside down, waiting some more, pulling the handle out slightly, and finally I gave up. Went to Shell and filled up (directly across the street). Since this time I've switched to Shell and now the gage goes past the F mark and stays there for ~25-30 miles before dropping down to the line. I haven't experienced the filling problem either.

BTW, I live in FL. Shell gasoline might be different down here. Only 93 octane goes in my G...
