Evaluation of the First Four Mods To My G
Evaluation of the First Four Mods To My G
Used Z-Tube
Value - 9 out of 10.
A slight increase in engine growl and throttle response. For the price ($50) a no brainer. Very easy installation.
R2c Air Filter Kit
Value - 8 out of 10. Significant increase in engine growl. Good value ($145). Easy installation but I am disappointed that the mounting bracket was no where near the right size and the heat shield left gaping holes to the engine compartment heat. When combined with the Z-Tube I perceived a significant power increase on my butt dyno.
Motordyne 5/16 Plenum Spacer
Value - 9 out of 10. Minor engine sound increase. Excellent value ($190). Installation was straightforward but a little nerve racking for a beginner like me (about two hours). Noticeable power increase at high rpms.
Grounding Wire Kit ( SxExCx)
Value 9 out of 10. Another excellent value ($120). The kit solved about 80% of my problem with the 5AT manual shifting. At times I had to hit the lever four times to downshift from third to second and now it takes only once. I have not noticed any other changes in the behavior of my car after the install but this one change makes it worth it. Easy installation (one hour).
These four mods combined have produced what I consider to be a very significant performance boost in my G and I heartily recommend them, particularly together, to anyone wanting performance improvements.
My next step will be a sway bar kit which will probably show a more significant improvement than anything I have done so far. I had a set on my Charger RT and there was a major improvement in handling.

The ground wires came from sxexcx and yes, the kit came with instructions which I read four times before starting the install. Not sure what you mean about installing the wires separately or all at once. Several of them share a common connection point. The complete job took one hour.

There's a really good chance you're going to be disappointed in the results of installing sways on the G35. Our Infiniti's come from the factory with relatively good balance, unless you install the sways with adjustable endlinks/springs and shocks you won't notice (as you called it) a significant improvement. There's only two mods that make a major difference in our G35s, the MotorDyne spacer (which you've done) and HFCs since that where the main restriction is in our exhaust systems.

Wow... really? OK, tie bars are a more noticeable difference, but sways and struts are the best things you can do for handling on any car. But you won't notice any difference until you take your car into some turns. A few lights and corners to the Vons doesn't count unless you're driving like a madman.
Sierrahpbt used the word significant in reference to how sways would improve the ability of his G35. I was lucky enough to have Stillen install my sways at their open house a few years ago and didn't notice a great deal of difference and I'm always play'in in the canyons. It wasn't until I installed the upper strut bar/springs/shocks and endlinks did I notice a significant change in my cornering ability and that's always running Michelins on my coupe.Gary

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods

What gaping hole are you talking about with the R2C? The cutout your snorkel should fit in? I bought the 350Z version that doesn't have the cutout because I don't run the snorkel. I did have to fab a bracket to hold the box tight so it seals against the hood since my intake tube isn't supported at the plenum like most are. You can see my bracket coming off the radiator support to the left side of the box in the pic.
Great write up BTW!!

Hey Blue, since you've already spent all the $$ with Sean why don't you get his recovery tanks and complete the "LOOK?" You won't have any problems selling your polished caps....
Looking good!

Gary I seriously considered that. I like the black/shiny contrast though so it'll stay for a while.
Who knows what the future holds??

I did the z-tube, spacer, MREV2 and Stillen intake at the same time. As a whole if felt as if my car had an easier time climbing into the higher rpms right away. I couldn't begin to tell you which one mad more of a difference. I installed my Bassani catback after that, not as much of a change in power, just a very deep growl. Now the F.I. HFC's, were like WOW, huge power boost. Had I known that ahead of time, I would have jus done the HFC's and leave the stcok exhaust alone, I ove the deeper sound but, I miss the stock sound. It was deep but not too loud. Next, I'm looking forward to taking it to UpRev in Austin for a tune, can't wait. GL with your mods, glad to hear you're happy so far.
Nice post, you're on the right track with your mods. Like most people, I felt a big difference after installing my motordyne sways. My GT Spec strut bar made a noticeable difference too. If you don't mind the fumes, definitely look into motordyne's ART pipes.
