"Service Engine soon" light

Alright, so I got my car yesterday, and took it home. I parked it in the garage. Later on, when I turned it on to take it for a spin, "service engine soon" light came on! What's up with that? I only had 15 miles on it. I am taking it to the dealer today, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. Oh, and I did keep it under 3,000 RPMs and didn't go above 65MPH. I hope it's nothing serious.

Re: "Service Engine soon" light

I bought mine with 300 miles on it in Florida - had to drive it back to Chicago. Service engine soon light was on for the first day of driving. Overnight, it turned itself off. Don't have a clue what was wrong.

If the gas cap is not secure it will trip the light for a few drives. It happened to me also. It will prolly go away.

Re: "Service Engine soon" light

Thanks!
I drove it for about 130 miles after the light came on, but it didn't go away. Gas cap is secured. I will take it to the dealer, just to be safe. I hope it will just go away.
One time I left the gas cap off (the gas boy left it off, since you are not allowed to put your own gas in NJ) in my Maxima during the rain, and I had to pay $100 to fix the problem.

They charged you $100 just to clear the MIL?
You're better off buying an OBD II reader to Dx and clear your own codes. Some will clear on their own with 7-10 cold starts as long as the condition is corrected. I thought the loose gas cap was one of them.

put down the windows and disconnect the negative terminal side of the battery and hold down the brake pedal for a few minutes.. if no fix .. leave it unplugged overnight and see if that does it ..
if not still .. off to the dealer ya go.

Its against the law in NJ to pump your own gas...I usually go out of my car and give 3 more clicks to make sure..

Re: "Service Engine soon" light

As Gordgee said in his post, there are OBD II scan tools available from your parts store that can scan for codes and allow you to erase a lighted MIL. A great tool to add to your tool box for a reasonable cost. Up here in Canada one just went on sale at one of our more popular arto parts stores for $150 CDN. And it seems that it works great on our G's. So as you can see if you get 'charged' $100 US for resetting your MIL , that would go a long way towards a scan tool which would pay for itself many times over, not to mention not having to run to the dealer's shop for service.
I've got one on order and Gordgee has one which he likes. These tools aren't as good as the Nissan/Infiniti 'Consult 2' tool but for everyday MIL's, which the majority of these probelms are, these tools are worth every penny. JMHO
Good luck with your issue,
