Is there a leak in my catch can or is this normal ??

okay .. so I finally found the time to install the PCV catch can I bought .. I made sure the fittings on the can had teflon tape, I bought 3/8 fuel hose from advance auto (hoping that isn't the problem) and two ss hose clamps for the connections going to the can .. now, everything went on easy but when I start it up I hear like air but I don't think it's the can leaking .. I squeezed the tube and the noise dimmed down .. I then opened the drain nut at the bottom while the car was on and the air noise went mUCH louder and the idle of the car changed so I'm hoping that's a good sign that I'm not leaking .. I noticed the OEM hosing is MUCH thicker than the hosing I'm using .. could the air noise just be the air running through the hoses at a fast rate (enough to hear it but not enough to stand out obnoxious?) .. once it all was connected, I drove for a good 40 mins .. car idle is perfect like it always was, I have no hesitations and the car actually feels like it's vacuumed up better than before although it's probably just in my head .. if the idle changed and the sound went much higher when I opened the drain nut, it's probably not leaking right ?? I'm hoping I just need to upgrade the hose I'm using to something stronger .. here is a quick pic of the setup now .. the hose has air flowing just fine and there's no bending in it .. I just need to get the fitting on the top to face the engine and it should be better .. am I worrying for no reason ? lol oh and no CELs or anything .. also, when I put the OEM hose back on with the can disconnected I still heard a FAINT noise like mine .. and when you shut the car off you hear the PCV sound like it's pushing the last bit of pressure out .. just confused lol

I have the same C6 catch can, what you didn't do was close the drain at the bottom. That's why you're hearing the noise you described. You can shorten the hose on top and point the elbow toward the direction of the engine, no reason to have that hose that long and it will look cleaner.

the drain at the bottom IS closed .. what I was saying is that while the car was running, I opened the drain to compare leak noises and it was not only MUCH louder but the idle changed as soon as pressure was released .. as far as the top hose, I didn't have anything at the time to tighten the top fitting enough to face the correct way and I already had everything mounted and ready to put on so that's just temporary .. I'm thinking the noise I'm hearing is just the sound of the PCV air going through the tube since it's not as thick as the tube it's replacing .. if the idle isn't messed up and as long as the tube doesn't bend, it's probably fine mechanically ?? I really do love it and as soon as I took the OEM tube off I saw the valve itself covered in oil and the whole inside of the tube had oil on the walls of it

Make sure you use fuel injection hose... Also, try applying another clamp on the hose connected to the plenum.

When the car is idling, do you see any of the hose "crimping" or pinching?

nah, the hose seems fine .. when it's running, if I squeeze the hose a little, the air sound dims down a bit so I'm thinking the hose itself might be too thin .. I'm gonna call around and fine the injection hose and turn that top fitting more .. because the top house and the slight air sound (when I'm thinking I had before the can just not as noticeable) the car rides perfect so I don't even know what to think lol

I was just checking and Goodyear makes SAE J30R9 fuel injection hose that I can pick up locally .. should that be fine for the can ?

^ Yep. Same one I got from Kragen. It's stiffer than the one you're using now.

Thanks a lot .. to you and Gary lol .. so I'll put the thicker hose in and turn that fitting around now that I have the damn tool to grab it lol .. if the idle is fine, the noise i'm hearing was probably there or a normal engine noise than, correct ?? I'm sure if there was some part of this leaking, that I would have a weird idle and much more noise since when I opened the drain while running the idle changed instantly .. I hope

I have the same noise, after fitting a catch can, pretty sure its down to the hose being thiner and not damping out the vacuum noise, i replaced two pieces of braided hose before realising.

honestly I'm glad you posted that !! I'm freaking out haha .. I just went and bought stronger hose .. Goodyear fuel injection hose .. I installed it .. get this .. the hose going from the PCV to the can was collapsing a little with the NEW hose but the new hose going from the can to the plenum was fine .. so I put the initial hose that I got from advance auto and left the fuel injection hose on the other side and it's NOT collapsing now .. no idea what the hell thats about but I'm scaring myself to death thinking I'm effing stuff up lol .. the noise sounds like it's coming from the actual PCV .. like a humming/buzzing/hissing noise .. I put the OEM back on and I'm too angry to even concentrate to see if it's a normal noise .. part of me thinks it's normal because it's such a tiny hole and all of that pressure going through it .. ?? so I left it alone and the car is riding fine .. on another note .. NOT EVEN 40 total mins of driving and when I took the top off there was oil in that can .. maybe 5 drops already .. so it's working but I'm hoping someone on here confirms that the PCV DOES make those noises regardless and that I'm not losing my mind .. all I want to worry about is draining the can and making sure the hoses don't crack or collapse .. help ??

^ Why not try it w/o the catch can. Bypass the catch can see if it makes the same noise?

tried that and it's still making noise only it sounds a little louder with the can connected .. I'm just freaking out because I don't know what would happen if one of the hoses collapsed or if I break **** .. you know the dealers would void my warranty in a heartbeat lol

I might try that again tomorrow though to compare even further .. I thought someone on here would know off hand about the PCV just being noisy like that .. the can itself seems to be a really good can so I have no clue right about now .. just hoping I don't ruin my engine with a damn catch can

so .. I did a little research and found a thread started by DaveB called "Check those PCV valves" .. in there he mentions checking the PCV to see if its bad (which I will do tomorrow) but on post number 11 he mentions that even under normal operation, the valve is going to "hiss" .. so, I'm guessing I can calm down a LITTLE until tomorrow lol .. I'm going to take the hose off the PCV tomorrow while it's running and do that vacuum check just to make sure .. I might even replace the valve for the hell of it since it's so cheap .. after that, I'll probably pass by somewhere and have someone check my hoses to make sure they don't look like they're going to collapse and to help me figure out WHY the hose going from the PCV to the can was collapsing a little .. good lord this car is going to give me a heart attack

so .. here are two pics of the current setup with the fittings tightened and the hoses not looking like a FOOL lol

If you buy the PCV valve, be aware that it doesnt come with the o-ring. You need to replace it when changing the valve. I believe its $5 bucks if you order it from a vendor here but if you order it from nissan or infiniti, I was told its $12.
