I bought an 05 (rev-up) G35 coupe from a dealership recently and they assured me that the car was completely stock. Well, I popped the hood and saw this aftermarket intake on it, which is fine by me, but after having the car for a month now, I'm curious what it is. The only thing I can find that looks similar to it is the K&N Typhoon Intake for Sedans (the coupe version of the intake looks totally different). Anyone know what this is!? I was planning on throwing a z-tube / pop charger on instead, but if this intake is actually better, I'd rather keep it! Can someone help me identify it!? Thanks!!!

 

Looks like a pipe that they used from any standard intake...maybe injen...then the MAF unit and they just placed the filter on the other end of the MAF unit. Thats my guess

 

You bought a car without popping the hood once? I'd start checking your car for other stuff the dealer might have lied to you about.

Nah, sorry I wasn't clear. I popped the hood when I was checking it out and saw the intake but didn't mind that it was in there because I had planned on going aftermarket on the intake anyway. I had the car checked out at an infiniti dealership before I bought it and the mechanic said that it was pretty much in perfect condition but did not make any mention of any aftermarket parts on it...anywho, ended up buying it and the first mod I'm looking to make is ztube/popcharger most likely. Better off with stock airbox than that short ram. Between the metal intake tube and the inlet location you're losing power due to the heat its ingesting. Lots of posts and dyno's have proved this as a loss. Only gain is probably the sound.

 

Thanks for the input. I figured as much from reading posts about heatsoak and placement of intakes. Guess it's time to swap this thing out. Do yall know if I'll need any other parts to do a ztube/popcharger swap considering I don't have the stock airbox? Or can I simply replace this intake w/ a ztube/popcharger? Thanks.

 

really youre never going to have a fast car with the G. I wouldnt worry about the minimal power loss you may be experiencing.. if you like the look and the sound i would keep it personally.

 

heh, agreed. I have a Honda CBR1000RR to feed my need for speed. My G is just for some fun driving. Just working on making it look good and sound good

 

yeah youd be better off sellin that and buyin a ztube and stillen filter or a whole stillen setup. pop chargers draw a lot of heatsoak, my buddy has one it sounds nice but im not going with that setup

 

yea i'm wary of the heatsoak issues with the popchargers...and i just dont understand why they're so popular even with the heatsoak problems!? (seems everyone and their mom on this forum recommends them and has them installed) maybe it's only really evident in certain areas? (i live in FL so that certainly doesn't help). I'm def gonna do some looking into of the stillen setup. do you know offhand whether any OEM parts are needed from the stock airbox? I don't have it anymore so this might be a problem if stock airbox parts are needed.

 

yeah im in chicago im not buyin a popcharger. people buy em cause theyre relatively cheap and sound greattt. im pretty sure you just buy the whole stillen setup which includes the ztube and has a plastic piece to protect against heatsoak. lemme double check.

doh! wish they sold it without the z-tube...i might just buy the kit and install it w/ the OEM z-tube and sell the stillen z-tube. any comment on how this intake sounds vs. a popcharger?

 

our oem intake tube sucksss. everyone takes it from the Z's. id keep the stillen ztube man. do you want power or sound? haha id say stillen is a lot better than the popcharger. theyll all add some sound. my buddies G sounds deeper than mine (my intake is stock...right now) im interested to see how the stillen combo will sound on mine. im sure he'll wanna cop my style
