is there anything wrong with using wheel spacers? does it create any problems?

Probably one of the best discussions on wheel spacers that I have come across.

 

They do add extra strain on the wheel bearings.

 

What's that little round thing next to the wheel that fell off? Just buy the wheels with the correct offset.

I thought the reason that guys wheel fell off because he didn't have the lug nuts properly on. Or was it that the studs broke?

 

It was because he used spacers but didn't "extend" his lugs.

The pic above is from a member who used spacers and didnt have extended studs. The lug nuts slipped off.

Use spacers with built in studs or make sure to get extended studs if the spacer doesn't come with them. Look into Ichiba or Kicks.

 

if he did'nt extend his studs than I'd say it's his fault not the spacer,if he was using the proper extended studs it'll be no problems...I think this can go both ways..

 

I've used spacers for years with no issues. BMW uses spacers on their 7 series in the rear to widen the track and so does honda in some of their older accords in the front.

 

Ouch on that guy's part. I wonder what size spacer that was because people say its "safe" to run 5mm without the extended studs.

 

^^ If you go through recent threads in the wheels.tires section you'll see the consensus is it's not safe to do that. Some have suggested that "maybe' a 3 mm spacer would be OK (ttrank) but to be safe you need extended lugs with any spacers. Anything over 5mm should have built in studs or you need to buy longer studs and replace your OEM ones. You follow that and you more than likely will never have problems with spacers.

Im running 15mm and 10mm and never had issues. I used Loctite on the spacer nuts to make sure they never work loose.

After you install spacers check and tighten them the next few days, the built in studs are usually press fit into the spacers and once installed on the car, the force from driving may loosen them, so tighten them up to seat the studs all the way against the spacer a day or 2 after installing them.

I installed spacers about a week ago...yesterday a heard a rattling coming from my front driver side tire. Turns out a couple of the spacer nuts were loose.

Will check again in a week to make sure they are tight.
