Need Help - Service Issues for Oil Consumption On my G35

Hey Guys,

I have gone through an oil consumption test on my G35 Coupe. When I brought my car in intially they did not replace my oil like it says on the bulletin but instead topped me up. I spoke with the service rep on this and they insisted it was acceptable. I brought in my car recently to finish off the 1,500KM test. I ran just under 9mm below full which according to the bulletin fails the test (needs engine replacement).

They topped up the engine oil, and released the car to me. However, they told me I have to do this test 5 times, and now asked me to come in the next 1,500km for test 2/5. They apparently have to prove I fall in the "no good" section 5 times.

It seems a little excessive to run this test 5 times, and really a complete waste of my time.

I've never heard of this practice before. Have any of you dealt with this round of oil consumption tests before?

I called bull**** and said the TSB does not mention anything like that. The service rep insisted Infiniti Canada advised all of them they have to test the oil consumption 5 times regardless of what is in the TSB.

I heard good things about this dealership on the forum, so I figured I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, and see if anyone on here has encountered the same thing.

I too believe 5 times is overkill and a huge waste of my time.

I did the test as soon as I got my 6mt 5 months ago. Dealership did an oil change and made me come back 1000 miles later. After the 1000 miles, they saw that it was a couple of mm low and told me to come back another 1k miles. It was about the same when I came back and they said that the vehicle was good to go.. So for me it was only twice I came in. They probably just want to make sure that your particular engine is consuming oil before they warranty it....GL!!

I just got my 06 6MT and I'm going to take it into the dealer to have them check for oil consumption before my warranty expires. I am kind of hoping that I do have it so I can get a new engine but it goes both ways.

It seems like almost every 6MT has oil consumption issues. Or maybe you will start to get it right after your warranty expires, which is usually how the world works. Is there anyone with a 6MT who doesn't even have a drop of oil consumption in their engines?

I had to take mine in four times.

One for the initial oil change, one for the 1000 mile test, one to drop off the car for the engine replacement and another to pick up the car.

5 checks is excessive. It's like taking a girl out 5 times before you can...

As for the 1000 mile test, be sure to witness the check. Our dipsticks aren't the best and if you don't see it for your own eyes, they can tell you anything. If you want to play hard, bring a ruler and have it measured in front of you. Also, let the engine sit for as long as you can before they check it. 30 minutes after driving isn't long enough IMHO. The dipstick will read higher than it really is. Take it to the dealer, park it, get something to eat and then have it checked.

If you want to fail the test for sure, keep the revs up, engine brake or just take it to the track. That will consume a far significant amount of oil and surely fail the test and you'll be far below 9mm next time.

Mine took three visits. But it wa really consuming oil so there was no question there was an issue. But they turned the car around quickly with a new engine.

If you have an OC issue it will show up no matter how many times they have to check it. A new engine costs $9K+ and from what I've seen posted they're replacing them with '07 units that will never have the OC issue. Be patient and go along with their game, if you have OC you'll win....

Thanks for the posts guys.

Essentially they are seeing how my engine is burning over the span of 7500km (5x1500km)

1st visit - initial oil change (which they did not do, only topped up), came back after 1500km (DONE)
2nd visit - oil check, top up, and asked me to come back after 1500km (DONE, failed test)
3rd visit will be to check oil again, top up, and ask me to come back after 1500km
4th visit will be to check oil again, top up, and ask me to come back after 1500km
5th visit will be to check oil again, top up, and ask me to come back after 1500km
6th visit will be to check oil again, top up and determine next steps

This is really excessive and I don't want to waste my time like this just to play their game, it is very unnecessary considering I already failed the test.

I am looking for answers from them right now. Will update this thread as this process continues.

Update: spoke with the service manager and they said because I am at the cusp of failure, he needs to make repetitive tests in order to build my case and their case for an engine coverage.

He was not prepared to submit my warranty claim to Infinity Canada with the test being close as they were. He mentioned if it was an obvious failure, he would stop it at 3 tests, but 9mm is too close to call.

He doesn't seem to want to screw me over, but instead being cautious. I still think 5 tests is way too much to prove this issue. Since I have started this process with them, I'm thinking I should just tough it out...

It is too many tests for it to be proven. They'll keep topping you off with fresh oil and/or with oil additive, which slows the real OC rate down in general (slick Dealer games). If it's a serious burner, then test will be completed much sooner no matter their top-offs and/or sneaky additives.

Older the oil faster the consumption, which is a real-world occurrence on these VQ's with moderate OC within a normal oil change interval. I've proved that over and over for years to present with my own personal self monitoring on my past original AND my warranty replacement in use. How it's driven matters too as mentioned and is true.

BTW, my replacement consumes too as many still do. What was stated prior is false about that. Some not as bad (mine) some just as bad and some not at all, so go figure. But that was on the longblocks they were replacing back then and was used in 2007.5 coupe production, not all 2007 coupes in general as mentioned.

Now it's just shortblocks with the latest TSB revision. No follow-up data on how those are performing...yet. The main OC threads here and my350z have been quiet in that regard.

My suggestion and what I did:
Played their first 1000 mi return game, just in the no good range (they played me...long story), got topped off (then they took reading...the game in a nut-shell), then told to return again at a 1000. I returned when I was a quart low instead, which still was well within the official return mileage span stated on TSB.

There was NO question mine failed with flying colors on second return at 24mm down with that return mileage on chart. Test complete, dealer submitted results to Corp, two or so days later was approved, replacement ordered, done deal.

Best cliff notes I could do for you. Excuse the length.

My .02

G/L

Where are you located? I assume you are in Canada? Cuz I am in Canada. I don't know if the TSB for Canada is same as the one in the States.

-The first time I went they did an oil change and told me to drive 2000km and don't touch anything (not even the dipstick)

-After 2000km, I went back and they said my car was completely fine, but that's bullsxxx cause I know my engine is consuming oil pretty bad because last time my engine was making LOUD noises at around 5000km since the last oil change (I usually change oil every 6000km) because the oil was too low.

-So then I told them if I can drive another 2000km and come back. They said Ok. But then I had to ask them which was really stupid because I thought the test was more than once.

-So now I have driven another 1800km and checked the dipstick, and it was roughly 21mm below the "H". My buddies at Nissan told me they can help me drain some oil before I go back if they still say my car is completely fine. I am going back this Saturday and I think I am going to bring a ruler with me and measure it together with them...
