hey guys. i went for my ny annual inspection today, and the guy told me that my emissions sytem needed to be cleaned in order to pass the inspection. my car has 52000 miles, and ive owned it since 41000. i dont know if the previous owner ever cleaned it out, so it seemed rational to me at the time. i spent $37 on the inspect and then $113 on having the emission system cleaned. did the guy rip me off or is this a legitimate possibility?

Highway driving at high RPM cleans out cat converter too. One of my bud's turboed RX-7 failed emisssion test twice and passed on third after doing some WOT passes on freeway.

u got ripped off. the emissions system on the G's if a few stupid hoses that carry excess fumes from the tank and the crankcase there isn't really anything to clog it unless your engine is really messed up. the catalytic converters work better the hotter they are so before you go in just punch it a few times.

Yeah man, sounds like a load of BS to me. Kind of how if you take your G to the Infiniti dealership they say your car also desperately needs xyz for a total of $1000...blah blah blah!

i say ripped .The emission system has a little more to it then mentioned above but iv never heard of cleaning any part of it really . Maybe a in cabin air filter if you can even call that emissions . Dont need cleaning on charcoal canisters or valves . Iv never heard cleaning of a cat . Egr nope . I cant see what they would clean or how they would find it to even tell you it needs cleaning .You should tell them to give you the fail paper that shows you if somthing that came up not ready on the ecu

thanks for the input guys. when i came back to pick my car up he said two things were wrong with it. the front tires were bare (which he showed me, they are =/) and that my emissions system needed to be cleaned to pass. should i go back to him and say unless you refund my $113 im going to report you to the dmv and call the police for passing my car with these tires?

ask him to show you what work was done for the passing of emissions test.

By what process did they clean your emission system? The EGR valve will get clogged over time/miles but that can be cleaned with carb cleaner and takes a maximum of 5 minutes to do. You need to ask what they cleaned and by what process! This truly sounds like a "RipOff!"
