Oil burning smell from loose dipstick?
Hi folks. I have an '05 G35 coupe AT with almost 26k on the odometer. I just drove from NC to NY for Thanksgiving which was.about a 1500 mile trip altogether. When I got back, I pulled in my garage and smelled what I thought was hot tire smell.
Well, my car's not a daily driver so I don't check the oil all the time. So on my way to my GF's house the other day, I get off the offramp and I smell oil burning and thought it was the car in front of me, then I notice smoke coming in through the vents. so when I pull into her driveway, I pop the hood and her stepfather and I have a look. he noticed my oil dipstick wasn't seated properly and proceeded to push it all the way in. I've since then driven about 300 miles after we properly installed the dipstick and I can still smell oil but its not smoking anymore. Oh, I also removed the skid plate under the front of the car to have a better look and didn't see any oil dripping down the side of the engine itself but there is definitely oil on the left side of the car on stuff like the steering rack and stuff like that, just not ON the engine.
So my questions are:
Could oil come up through a loose, improperly installed dipstick?
Also, how long til the oil smell is completely gone?
I just hate to take it into the dealership if I don't have to.
Thanks for your help, folks.

Yes you can loose oil through the dipstick hole. Same thing happened to me I changed my oil and latter that day I noticed a burning oil smell and I popped the hood and rechecked everything and noticed that the dipstick was not all the way in. You will have the burnt oil smell until you clean that side of the engine to get all the oil off or untill it burns it off.
