Hey, guys and gals, I'm new to this forum so don't be too hard on me, but until you've driven a rotary don't think it's so terrible. It isn't bad at all. I had a gen one RX7, and it was one fine car. My friend who I gave it is still driving it at about 160K miles and no engine rebuild---for an '82 that I bought new.
Now get this: imagine if the G35 Coupe could LOSE about 200 pounds---how would that help our power to weigh ratio, right? Well, the RX8 has an engine that weighs LESS than its 6MT with a weight of 270 pounds over all, putting out 250HP. Not bad, eh? Imagine lightening up the front end a bit and losing weight. See, I knew you'd like it.
As to the looks, to each his/her own. Me, I like the RX8, but it's not for everybody. Neither is the G35 Coupe or the 350Z, for that matter.
Happy Driving!

Re: Those of you buying an RX8 over a Coupe
I had a friend with the last generation RX7, it melted on him, and by melt, i mean the body of the car straight melted when the engine caught on fire, I know that's an isolated incident, but the guy knew how to drive/take care of his car, so it didn't melt b/c of him. Then again, every car company has a lemon here or there, but as for the RX8 vs. G35 debate, there isn't one, G35 is much better looking, and the Infiniti experience is ten times what the mazda experience is!

A rotary is on my list of cars to buy once I'm filthy rich and have an actual garage (rather than renting my underground parking space). And I like the handling of Mazdas, for some reason they seem to be in tune with my personal driving instincts. But I think I liked the RX-7 more than the RX-8, even though the re-designed rotary sounds like it has much more potential. I won't be buying one, but I hope the RX-8 does well enough for them to keep improving it, rather than bury the rotary forever. Way too much homogeny in this industry, gotta encourage the guys who try to be a little different.
I still can't imagine what I'd be buying right now if the G35 wasn't out there. I'm incredibly disappointed with the (lack of) styling decisions on the GTO. So glad Infiniti got it right.
