excessive oil consumption

Re: excessive oil consumption
Please understand I don't work for Nissan or any automotive dealer. Tech is short for Technical ------- the name I've used for the passed 8 years on INET.
I do have an affilation [business operations consultant] with a group of independent companies that repair Lexus and Infiniti models but that is it.
Just owned an Infiniti since 1990.
If you think about it one bad engine per 1,000 G sold is $8,000/1000= $8 extra in warranty expense per car sold is high but not terrible..........now 1 in 100/50 could get expensive.
Since it comes out of the profit column.

Re: excessive oil consumption
Yours is not an isolated incident. Some of the VQ engines have had issues with oil consumption. I actually had engine failure from it. Fortunately after A LOT of B.S., Infiniti replaced my engine under warranty. See the thread here:

To omahag, no I didn't hammer on it during the break in period. I work way too hard to afford a G then to abuse it.

Re: excessive oil consumption
You shouldn't rely on the low oil warning light. Check it on the dipstick yourself periodically. If you're not familiar with your car's oil burning habits, check it about every 500 miles, or about once every other fuel fillup. Once you learn what it typically uses, you can check it at the interval you think it might get a bit low. See your owner's manual if you're not sure how to check your oil.

Re: excessive oil consumption
Not necessarily. Its normal for some engines to burn oil. As long as its not excessive, its fine. Usually, excessive oil burning is deemed to be more than a quart per 1,000 miles.
Some engines don't burn any oil (like mine), but some burn a bit, so that's why it needs to be checked.
Oil level is critical to maintaining proper oil pressure. The oil is the lifeblood of your engine. Think of what happens if your body runs low on blood and blood pressure - you can die quickly. Same thing with your engine and its oil. It's no less important to check your oil periodically as it is to make sure you have gas in the tank.

i am not that handy when it comes to checking consumption levels...is it safe to say if my "check engine " light doesnt trip...i am okay?

NO, that is NOT safe to say. DO NOT rely on your oil light. I was driving 3.5 quarts low and I only saw the oil light come on once for a brief second when I stopped hard at a traffic light.

To all those with excessive oil consumption, please tell us if you broke your car in (no WOT, kept it <4k RPM, varied speeds, etc) and for what mileage you did this for.

During the break-in period, when I first bought my car, I kept the RPM's under 3k and tried to vary my speed on the highway for 1,200 miles.
I am doing the same with my new engine.

Re: excessive oil consumption
After reading this thread I decided to check my oil. I have never checked my oil other than after my first oil change with synthetic at 3700 miles to make sure it was full at that oil change. I now have 7300 miles and just checked it. It's absolutely full. I am not an agressive driver and I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Re: excessive oil consumption
I don't know if I'm also "one of the lucky ones" or what but my car has been reading the exact same level on the dipstick for about 2700 miles. I broke it in by accelerating hard for a second or two then letting it run below 2k rpm for at least 5 mins. This is to let the engine cool as localized heat buildup (as in the bearings) is not read by the temp. gauge. I repeated this many times to make sure the rings seated properly. I even hit the rev limiter at 1000 miles with light load on the engine (~ half throttle) to expose it to its operating range. I don't know if this is right or not but I hope I never burn any oil :P

Re: excessive oil consumption
i followed all manufacturer guidelines for break in and maintenance. i also am not an aggressive driver , my car is completely stock and i have never used synthetic oil. the car is now at the dealer...though i am not optimistic....this problem also didn't become apparent until 17k miles or so..
this may be similar to a problem that bmw had with m3's a while back (a friend bought one) for certain production dates, there were higher incidences of engines eating themselves. the user groups were charting all incidences of engine failures as a function of production date

Re: excessive oil consumption
I wonder if this is the case with the G35's? Maybe there's a link between the VINs of cars that have consumption, or maybe it's random (?)
