6mt coupe brembo squeal when not braking
Hey, I know that brake squeal has been discussed a thousand times, but I have a weird one and wanted to know if anyone has had the same.
My car has ~13k miles on it and for about the last 7k miles or so there is an intermittent squeal coming from the right (I think front) wheel, only when I am not applying the brakes. If I apply the brakes it immediately goes away. I am told that as of today I have 20% pad left but that means 7 k miles ago I should have had 60% pad left so it shouldn't be pad wear indicators. I have meticulously cleaned off brake dust (dealer did it once also) and that had no effect. The noise has never appeared in wet driving conditions.
Does anyone have any thoughts? My dealer is stumped (but that is nothing special with these guys).
Anyway, other than that I am in love with the car. Just finished putting in my satellite aux input kit, 7 in lcd touchscreen, and a laptop w/ gps is going in this weekend. Just can't get enough

Superb question. I get the SAME exact thing in my Coupe. I hit the brakes and it goes away. I think it is one of the pads bouncing against the rotor on and off. I know my dealership will also be stumped so I don't think there is much I can do about it. I gotta go, but I'll make another post when I get the chance.

Yea I got the same exact thing with my 6mt. I have about 15k miles and I have had it for the past year and before that I had the squealing whenever you hit the brakes and I believe that it might be the fact that the pad does not come all the way back after you hit the brakes. Im not exactly a brake expert but I have worked on cars since I was 14 so I kinda know what goes on so Im not an expert but thats just my guess.

That is an interesting thought. I had that problem on my first car, but that was almost 10 years ago so I can't remember if it sounds the same. I am about to pick the car up from the dealer, I will be sure to check out if the pad looks loose.

The problem is, it would be impossible to tell if the pad is loose or not. I agree with 300zx, I think the pad doesn't fully "let go" and it is causing that squeaking when we're NOT braking.
Either way, it's been proven time and time again that our dealerships barely know how to deal with our cars' problems so I doubt I'll even bring it up the next time I'm in service.

dude i JUST started getting this noise last nite. i thot it was like a slow train going next to me, but then i realized it was my brakes. it's comin from the drivers front and it's pretty annoying.

Guys,
These are not the brakes, and squeak is coming from the rear - the rear axle to be exact. Take it to the dealer and have them contact Infiniti Service Center if they don't know what to do about it. I had the same problem - intermit rocking squeak at cruising speed (usually around 30mph) that goes away when I braked. Took it to the dealer, they took the rear axle apart and lubed the splines - vualla, squeak is gone!

Speedoholic, thanks for the post. I actually noticed that I can always hear the noise when I'm doing 25-30mph in those 25 zones. I wish our dealerships weren't so clueless about this sh*t, I KNOW it's gonna take me at least a couple of pointless visits before they finally fix it.

You're right there.... It took me two pointless visits before they gave up and asked me to take a tech for a ride so I could show them that "imaginary" sound.... I took a tech for a ride (3rd visit) and was about to give up when the sound didn't appear, but then half a mile to the dealer the sucker woke up to life [img]/w3timages/icons/cool.gif[/img] it was as if I had just won the lottery...

on my next oil change i'll check how much pads are left. i think it was caused by the brake wear indicator. i switched to hawks and things seem good, but then again i dont have the indicator on them.
