Which Grade of Gas? - G35 Coupe 6spd
I have a 6spd coupe and I called the dealer asking what they reccomend, and they said that premium is only needed for max performance.
What do you guys suggest and why? Can I get away with the middle grade, 89? Gas is so expensive here in California. I'm not really seeking max performance, just looking for the gas that will work in the engine without causing damage. Keep in mind, the manual DOES NOT say that you have to use 91 or higher gasoline, it is merely reccomended (there is a differance!).
Will I experience any knocking with 89 gas? Thanks for your help!

put whatever you want in it dude, it's your car. i think it will not be as responsive with lower grade gas and combustion is at a lower temp and the ECU will make some changes to prevent pre-ignition.
Oh BTW, if you do a search, you'll find about 593 threads on this exact same topic!!!

I thought dealers were more familiar with owners manuals....hmmmmm.
The owners manual recommends 91 octane fuel in the coupe.
The coupe has slightly more agressive timing and fuel mapping than the Sedan which means the higher octane.
As P_Diddy says, there are many threads here concerning the subject.

If it puts your mind at ease, then use regular, 89 octane or whatever. Personally, I'd never touch the stuff and I'm glad that 93 octane is the standard here in NJ!! I think I'd shoot myself before using regular fuel...but that's just me, I like the high rpm's.

89 will not hurt the engine - it will hurt performance. The computer will retard the timing so that no damage is done to the engine due to detonation. the result of the retarded timing will be decreased performance. those are the facts, now you have to decide.

Alright,
Enough of this sh#%. I can't believe the audacity of people to assume someone's financial situation based upon them not wanting to put premium gas in the car. The question is justified. It is like asking "Do I need rip up two dollar bills every time I fill up to keep my car running efficiently and safely? If the answer is yes-I am sure he would not hesitate to shred the money. However, if the answer is no, I think only an idiot would rip up their money-regardless of how much they have in their bank account. As posted above, the answer is yes and no. It will not harm your car, but it will retard the timing and hence reduce performance. Now, that is an individual choice that could go either way, depends upon how much you value that marginal gain in performance-and hence either answer is justified.
gspotter and godlike0104-hopefully you get my point, but based upon your prior posts, I won't be suprised if you don't and reply with some more uninformed, unimaginative, and immature comment.

Re: Which Grade of Gas? - G35 Coupe 6spd
g4ian, omahaG: thank you guys a bunch. these were the responses i was seeking. to all you guys saying "dont drive the car if you cant afford premium" thanks for wasting my time and i feel sorry for you wasting yours as well.
so bottom line i can use 89 without hurting the engine as the car will correct itself for the change in octane.
i'm not seeking max performance of the vehicle right now, just the best bang for the buck.
thanks again to you guys with useful info!

Re: Which Grade of Gas? - G35 Coupe 6spd
I just picked up a new '04 Coupe 6MT on Saturday the 6th. I also have a Nissan 300ZX. For the 300ZX which has a similar engine (VG30DE) as the G's VQ35DE, Nissan REQUIRES premium fuel. They apparently softened their stance on this requirement for the VQ but I think that is to help avoid scaring off potential customers if anything. If I was interested in buying a used G, I wouldn't buy it if I knew the owner had used anything except premium fuel. Using less than premium may even hurt your gas mileage a little (not sure since I've never tried that). Please don't take my previous post personally.

Re: Which Grade of Gas? - G35 Coupe 6spd
yah, that is actually another valid point. If the computer is retarding the ignitioin timing, the mileage may suffer a little. Do some experimenting. Run a tank of premium and check your mileage. Run another tank of premium attempting to drive the same and check your mileage again. This will give you two tank averages for premium. Then do it with two tanks of 89. Again try your hardest to imitate the driving habits of all four tanks of gas. If it does drop the mileage do the math to see if the $ for the 89 vs. premium is a savings over the $ for the fewer miles per tank.

Re: Which Grade of Gas? - G35 Coupe 6spd
How sure are you guys that 89 octane doesn't hurt performance anyways? The instruction manual doesn't really mention it. Plus, the G is a pretty high output motor (80hp per liter) so 91+ octane fuel really helps out at higher revs.
