Hey all

I am currently in the market for a new Ride. My last 3 cars were slush box V-8's with plenty of hp and tq (96 mustang cobra with an ATI blower, BMW 540I and M5). I drove a 2004 G coupe 6 sp the other day and like the way the car feels and looks. I have viewed several of the threads here and have found several mods for the G and have a few questions.
1. What does the Stillen Supercharger make at the wheels (hp/tq)? Do you have to get a replacement hood for this unit? I like the ATI but the dealer said Stillen would not void the warranty. He told me he would put that in writing.
2. Are there any headers, cats and catbacks that are very dependable and produce good power?
3. Does a CAI do much more than add an air gulping sound?
4. What links provide the best source for aftermarket performance parts?
5. Can the G handle the stresses of added HP/TQ that a supercharger provides?
6. What suspension mods will make the G pleasant as a daily driver but hang well in the corners?
7. Is there any software or ECU mods that provide a difference in power?
I am not interested in doing mods that create problems or extra expense.
If money were no object and you could mod your car to be an A$$kickin and DEPENDABLE ride...

What would the best combination of mods. help me build the perfect beast.

Thanks

al

Thanks for the honest reply. The new M5 is truly going to be a screamer but its 1.5 years away and prolly north of $90k. besides, as good as the SMG is sposed to be, there aint no clutch. If i do go that route it will more than likely be in the second or third year of production.

I do like the looks of the G car and it handles nicely. I didnt rag it out on the test ride cuz the car only has 30 miles and if I buy it, I want to break it in properly. I also believe it to be dependable unless my research here proves otherwise.

I understand the 05 will have a bit more hp and tq, some interior finishes and No brembos. wondering if that is a good tradeoff?

one thing for sure, it's nice having options.

regards,

al

I like the questions you ask as that is the same ones I would be asking. I wanted to get the Stillen but I have heard the power output is only 60hp to the wheel and that is less than what I was looking for. I was looking at the Vortech or the Procharger as they seem to provide more output and hopefully one day the Vortech will be CARB legal.
I would also get the headers and the plenum and then get the ECU reflashed, hopefully that will give you more than enough power to be happy with.
I have a 650hp 3000gt vr4 but this car seems to be more to my liking.

Re: First Post

I would respectfully disagree with Mr. Elussive that the transmission/chassis/platform wasn't developed for 340+ hp.

The AT is sourced from the q45, with 340hp on tap. The chassis is shared with the FX series and a version is shared with the new M45, both with v8 motors north of 310 hp.

In my opinion, the G35 isn't any more tail-happy than any other rear-driver with gobs of torque. If you want tail-happy, look into a 5.0 mustang.

Someone just broke into the 13's with a stock 6MT sedan, so these cars can be driven plenty quick.

As an aside, I wasn't aware that BMW put a slushbox in the M5. Were you referring to the E28 M5?

Re: First Post

1. What does the Stillen Supercharger make at the wheels (hp/tq)?

About 60 for the roots blower, and another 25-30 with an intercooler.

Do you have to get a replacement hood for this unit?

Yes.

I like the ATI but the dealer said Stillen would not void the warranty.

Wrong. You can buy a warranty through Stillen for their blower. But Infiniti is not going to back you if you blow it up with a SC or Turbo kit on it.

He told me he would put that in writing.

See what it says before you get sweaty palms.

2. Are there any headers, cats and catbacks that are very dependable and produce good power?

Yes, many of them in fact, for all three of the above.. All based on the VQ35DE motor that is the workhorse for the 350Z, Maxima, FX35 etc.

3. Does a CAI do much more than add an air gulping sound?

A few ponies. The jwt popcharger and the z tube seem to be a favorite combo for a quick addition of hp with minimal impact on the pocketbook.

4. What links provide the best source for aftermarket performance parts?

Try My350Z.com, where a lot of real mod enthusiasts and track types hang out. Lots of good threads there for performance focused discussions.

5. Can the G handle the stresses of added HP/TQ that a supercharger provides?

Applied intelligently, yes. I have 15,000 supercharged miles on my G and ZERO problems so far. But I am careful.

6. What suspension mods will make the G pleasant as a daily driver but hang well in the corners?

Stiffer sways and a good coilover kit (I use the Tein Flex with the Electronic Damping Force Control unit to adjust the damping between street, highway and track use, and it is very excellent).

7. Is there any software or ECU mods that provide a difference in power?

Yes. Technosquare in Torrance does a reflash.

I am not interested in doing mods that create problems or extra expense.

All mods cost money, and if you get more performance, they create stress on the car from that performance. But in general, all those you made inquiry about are readily available and if intelligently applied, should be trouble free. If you do nothing to the car and drive like a dope, you will hurt it anyway, so it really is all up to the driver on this one.

If money were no object and you could mod your car to be an A$$kickin and DEPENDABLE ride...

Totally up to you on what you like, but mine is a street civil car that works very nicely on the track. It would work better with a more capable driver, but life is unfair. If you are interested in some of what I have done to the car, you can check www.g-owners.com for some articles on mods, and track days with videos.

Good luck, have fun, and drive safely out there.

Re: First Post

This is what makes a forum so great...lots of information and opinions...keep them coming.

Chicago, you mentioned the AT as being capable to handle higher loads, does that, in your opinion, relate to the 6 mt as well?
My reference to a "slush box" was intended as a manual shift. As for me, I need to have a manual shift to enjoy a sporty car. Something about rev matched downshifts and toe/heel driving that can only be had with a clutch.
I had 370 rwhp on my cobra. If I loaded up in first and shifted to second to third, the wheels were totally lit til I let up. I only did that once! Normal driving with fun thrown in at the right time makes having that extra power enjoyable.

cheers
