G35C Daily Driving In The Winter. Safe, Or Not?
G35C Daily Driving In The Winter. Safe, Or Not?
I live near Chicago, where the winters get really bad sometimes.
Has anyone had any experience driving the G in winter conditions, or bad rain? How does it handle?

Do not attempt to drive on the Michelin Pilots in ANY amount of snow. You will need a good set of snow tires such as the Blizzak LM22 or equivilent. I drive the G daily, the snows go on from Dec 1st - Apr 1st.

Yeah, if you have the 18" wheels, keep them off the snow! The tires they use for the 18" rims are high performance summer tires and they don't even TRY to grip the snow. Trust those of us who have had experience with our Coupes in the snow: you'll only make your car a hazard to itself and other drivers on the road, and there's no chance you'll get from point A to point B safely. =(

Re: G35C Daily Driving In The Winter. Safe, Or Not?
I drove my G twice last year in the snow and id didn't do well either time. The stock tires are terrible. The first time in snowed (caught me by surprise) I couldn't get the car up past 10mph. The 2nd time I ended up in someones yard, but managed to work my way out.
I won't be driving the G at all this winter. I said that last winter too, but this winter it will be much harder to drive the G, considering it won't have a motor in it!

Re: G35C Daily Driving In The Winter. Safe, Or Not?
I'm the guy that started the thread Official Winter Tire Setup, and trust me, there is a reason for that. Last year I was driving on 18" winters (Pirelli W210), which are supposed to be excellent winter tires. Turned out I could get by on plowed roads with minimal packed snow, but any decent snowfall, even just a couple of inches, and I was screwed. Driving sideways down the road trying to get traction at like 2 MPH, couldn't even make it up my driveway.
My point is this, 18"+ sizes are just not ideal for winters with 45 or less profile. It just doesn't have enough tread to catch all that snow. So this year I bought a set of 17" OEM coupe rims and will downsize by one. That will most definitely help.
Also, unless you plan on driving your car on highways at 100+ MPH in the winter, then you are wasting your money and traction by going with High Performance Winter Tires. These high speed tires are meant for people who rarely see snow or ice, maybe for the occasional trickle powder coating of snow on the roads.
If you have serious snow fall in your area, avoid the Performace Winter category and stick with the Studless Ice & Snow category. For example, the LM22 is an excellent Performance Winter where as its counterpart Studless Ice & Snow is the WS50. Almost every tire company has a tire in each category.
Michelin:
Pilot Alpin & Alpin PA2 (Perf)
Artic Alpin (I&S)
XICE (I&S)
Pirelli:
Winter 210 & 240 (Perf)
Winter Carving (I&S)
Bridgestone:
Blizzak LM22 & LM25 (Perf)
Blizzak WS50 (I&S)
Dunlop:
Winter Sport M2 & M3 (Perf)
Graspic DS-1 & DS-2 (I&S)

Re: G35C Daily Driving In The Winter. Safe, Or Not?
I live around Philly and love my G, but it is absolutley horrible in any amount of snow. Almost crashed several times,
the closest was sliding accross the turnpike twice while driving perfecrly straight at 30mph, luckily I didn't hit anything. Buses and semis were passing me before I lost it.
It's so bad that I just bought a used 4x4 pick-up for the winter

I live in Chi Town also and was going to get some winter tires. I was only going to get Blizzaks for the rear tires (18"s and keep the 18 summer Pilots on the front. Do you guys think this would be a safe enough setup? I only drive about 3-4 miles to work. Is it really necessary to have all four tires be winter tires?

Re: G35C Daily Driving In The Winter. Safe, Or Not?
you need to change all 4. the front wheels are your turning wheels...no grip on front means you will have no control of your car at all in the snow.
Re: G35C Daily Driving In The Winter. Safe, Or Not?
It was snowing here in jersey this past weekend on sat. night. There was about half an inch of snow but I had no problems with the stock pilots, didn't lose control once. I was doing about 25 on local roads and 60 on highways. Maybe cause I only have about 5k on my tires and have plenty of thread left?
