what he is talking about is oil consumption due to bore/ring. This is a good rip from a post on another forum to explain effects of piston rings, bore and oil consumption.

1) If the piston is worn, are the ring grooves shot? If the ring grooves are worn even a tiny amount the rings won't seal so well and oil will get past the rings and burn. Check the specs.

2) Bore ovality causing poor piston ring sealing. Speaks for itself really. Once the bore is ridged in the wrong place or unevenly oval the rings will never seal rightl; the result is blow-by and rapid oil degradation, high oil consumption etc.

Best take advice from someone who knows their stuff and has examined the wear on your bores in person.

cheers

Angry Took my car in to get fixed...

So I decided to take in my 03 6MT OEM G35 Coupe in because I was burning about 2 quarts of oil every tank. The car runs fine, but man the smell of the oil was making me nauseous and my exhaust tips were getting blackened. I also heard your catalytic converters would go bad fairly quickly.

So I decided to take it in to the shop after trying to see if I could fix it and checked the compression etc and that was all fine. No leaks, or performance issues, just oil burning/consumption. The mechanic told me that the Valve covers needed to be replaced and I ended up signing up for a $2,200 fix. Hopefully it will be fine when I pick it up on Feb 4, 2013. Will that fix my issues in the long run too?

Did I get ripped off? Is it something else?

Smell of burning oil does sound like oil burning off of the exhaust.

Just got my car back and seems to be running fine, eventually needed to replace several gaskets and a timing chain tensioner. Turns out the valve cover gaskets were all cracked and the Cam seals were replaced too. The Intake gasket set was replaced, pcv valve, and the Front Crank seal too. It seems like a big job so I think for $2,200 it was pretty reasonable. Also got it back 2 days late which totally sucked.
Anyways, back on the road, hopefully it's all sealed up!

The VQ have been known to burn oil since 2002.

Thumbs down Traded it in...

Unloaded it...Turned out the rings were shot and needed to replace it. I was looking at $4k to get the whole thing done. I ended up trading it in for $8k and bought a used 2009 Coupe 6MT 36,000 miles for $27,900 at Tysons Cornver, VA Infiniti. They suck by the way, never go there.
