Clutch question

I noticed in the last 2-3 weeks that my clutch kind of 'catches' on something when shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It's almost like the clutch isn't fully disengaging when i clutch in, and the gears are still grabbing at it a little bit. Any ideas? It doesn't seem to happen if I shift really slow and let the RPMs drop to right where they need to be before moving the shifter to the next gear. I have an 05 6MT with 68k miles on it so I'm hoping the clutch isn't going already. Thanks for any input.

Sounds like your clutch is going out.

^ just sounds like it's time for a new clutch.

It's a wear and tear part and needs to replace timely just like brake pads and tires.. although under regular driving a clutch will last a very long time. 68k is good for the life of that clutch.

You can go with an OEM one or do the JWT clutch for some more grab =)..

I was afraid of that. As long as it's not my transmission having problems, I don't mind replacing my clutch soon. Will it be bad on my transmission if I drive it like this for a little bit longer? Or is it only bad on my clutch?

I've been looking at some clutches already. I'm thinking an aftermarket clutch with a new OEM flywheel. I don't think I'd be able to stand the chatter of an aftermarket flywheel.

OEM fly wheel is upwards of like $700 shop price..

JWT fly wheel AND clutch combo is around $700 ballpark

OEM fly wheel is expensive and it's not necessary to replace it at 68k, unfortunately you cannot resurface your OEM flywheel but getting a new clutch is fine. If you're happy with the way it drives right now just grab another OEM clutch.. If you want more grab I'd get the JWT.. Most grab with least amount of noise (from experience)

Is the flywheel with the JWT combo a lightweight flywheel?

I'd like a clutch that's slightly more heavy duty than the OEM clutch. I love the way it drives right now but I plan on turning my G into more of a 'toy' with a few upgrades eventually which will most likely cause me to drive it a little harder...

Yes a lot lighter then OEM.. OEM is one heavy bitch to get out especially if you're doing it under the car ._.

I think you'll be very happy with the JWT it grabs a lot better and out of the few aftermarket clutches I've driven on this combo is by far the quietest

Thanks for the info. As long as it's pretty quiet I'll be happy with it. I'll look into it.

Is it feasible to replace a clutch yourself, just time consuming I assume? I really don't want to pay the $600+ in labor at a shop. We have a pretty loaded garage as far as tools go because my brother works on cars so that wouldn't be an issue.

People usually charge around $100-$150 to do a clutch with flywheel..

The biggest pain is that you're on the floor.. =\ and you'll need a friend to help you.. and you'll need to jack the car really high on stands.. it'll be a whole days work on the floor as well.. I've dont it once and I will never do it again lol.

JWT combo (last I bough it around OCT 2010) came with a fly wheel align tool too =) (if you plan on doing it yourself).

Wow only $100-$150 for someone else to do it? That might be worth it.

If me and my brother have a spare day, we could just grab a 12 pack and make a day out of it.

CarBodyKits is saying the JWT combo is quiet, which is great. I'd suggest doing a youtube search or something to try and get a listen to some cars with the JWT and some alternative setups, so you know how loud it will be and what options you have. The gear roll over issue we face (not called clutch chatter) is quite loud and alarming if you're not expecting it.

I've been doing some research online and I'm considering an Exedy stage 1 clutch with a Nismo flywheel. This seems to be a decent combo without breaking the bank. I don't want too light of a flywheel due to the chatter so the Nismo seems like a happy medium. Any input on this combo is appreciated. I don't drive my G that hard (just the occasionally spirited driving) but I do plan on doing some track days at some point in the future.

Exedy makes the oem clutch iirc. Here's my train of thought: go with the lightweight if you can get a better deal than oem OR if you really plan on running some serious power and tracking it. It really doesn't make a huge difference and our cars will always be slow unless HEAVILY modded lol. If you decide on big HP you won't really be concerned about noise. My racecar has a fidanza lightweight flywheel and it's noise isn't nearly as noticeable as my exhaust, turbo, RFL bov, 2 way diff, suspension arms/coils, etc etc...

I have the same problem with my car it feels like sometimes the clutch pedal is getting stuck when trying to change gears at times. And I've grinded my gears a couple of times would this require me to change out clutch and flywheel or is grinding going to affect my transmission too? 04 g35 coupe 6mt 80k on odometer
