What I like to do (something I learned from an all timer at an SCCA event) is when you get new rims, before mounting the tires on them, take a metal scribing tool (looks like a thick pen that has a vibrating / spinning sharp tip) and write inside the rim the following...
Attn Wheel / Service Technician
Wheel Owner: NAME
For: COLOR, YEAR, MODEL, MAKE
Vin: VIN
Please Verify Customers ID
Contact Local Police If ID Doesnt Match
REWARD OFFERED IF STOLEN
Scribe the above atleast twice (4 would be even better) on opposite ends of the inside of the rim. To make it stand out even more, you can spray a neon color on top of it, which will be easy for everyone to see and notice.
Now this may sound like a long process, but its a good way to help get back your rims in the event they get stolen and the theives decide to have the tires changed, dismounted or whatever. Now, its obvioulsy not fool proof, but for the most part it does offer some protection not to mention, it will put the thief in a really weird position when asked to see his ID and vehicle registration to match the VIN.
Reward wise, well that's up to. How much would it be worth for you to get back a set of wheels? $25? $50? $100?
If you ever decide to sell the wheels, you can always sand away the writting with a dremel or even sand paper. It will NOT hurt the rim!
Just something I found to be an excellent, easy and cheap way to add some protection to the dilema of wheel theft...

Re: **RIMS STOLEN** #2
The idea here is simple...
A Thief that just stole wheels wont dismount the tires from the rims, if he doesnt have too. And even if he did, someone who's going to be stealing rims, for the most part wont have access to his or her own tire mounting equipment, so they'll still have to take the wheels somewhere. He will either use the wheels himself as is or sell them on the black market, to friends, etc.... Now in the event he does keep them and uses them on his car and when the time comes for new tires, or if just wants new ones on there anyway, when he takes them to get mounted up, that's when the tire / service tech will notice the inside tag and that may catch the theif or the new owner of the wheels off guard.
