Which car to take on trip?
Which car to take on trip?
My wife and I are going to drive to Short Hills, NJ from Tampa, leaving tomorrow morning. We would leave NJ the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
The weather in Short Hills (per Accuweather) for the next 10 days or so will vary from daytime of low 60s-40s, and to 40s-low 30s at night and some rain. No snow mentioned.
The route I will take is on I-95 to Columbia,SC. Pick up I-77 there and change to I-81 near Roanoak.. Get on I-78 at Harrisburg and on to our destination. I am not sure of the weather on the route, but, we go up/down some pretty high elevations along the way.
My dillema is which car to take. We have an Audi Avant 1.8T as well as the new G35 coupe. The 1.8T has all-season tires, the G has the 19 inch summer tires. I am still breaking-in the G-so do not anticipate any RPMs>4000 for at least half the trip(unless the devil makes me do it!). Being a Florida guy, I have no experience driving on icy roads or snow.
Can you see where I'm going? We do not need the carrying capacity of the Avant. My inner "boy racer" says the G would be a blast to drive, but, not if the weather leads to traction problems. I am seeing forum people noting that they have been putting winter tires on their Gs up North, and how horrible the summer tires are on the G in snow/ice.. My "practical" side says to use the Audi. I used the Audi last year, and it was fine, but, boring on this fairly long trip. It had summer tires on it then. The seats of the G are much more comfortable than the Audi IMO. The radio is far better in the G. The Audi has much firmer (almost jarring) ride with it's sport suspension. No heated seats in the Audi. No AWD in the G.
Maybe I am asking the question to a "biased" group, but, which car would you use for a trip like this?

IMHO, with that many miles, better safe than sorry. It breaks my heart to say it, but take the Audi. Do you want to borrow my "X" ?

Keep an eye on the weather, and if no snow is forecast, take the G. You shouldn't have any problems.
I live near Jacksonville and will be driving up to northeast Indiana for Thanksgiving. Flurries are predicted there on Thursday and I'll be taking the G Coupe 6MT and expect no problems. I used to live near Chicago and have driven a 300ZX on the Indiana Toll Road which was totally covered in snow- you couldn't even see the pavement.

If we get even a dusting of snow in the NE while you have the G - it will be inoperable. Most of us make the changeover to snow tires this weekend. Leave the G home - better safe than sorry.

Take the Audi. The G sucks in the rain, the Audi has a smoother ride, and the Audi will be extremely stable at high speeds should you choose to push it (the Germans are the ones with the autobahn, after all...).

The G35 is fine in the rain, but i wouldn't risk taking it to nj in case of snow. The weatherman isn't always right, take the audi

When you are breaking the car in, you are supposed to vary the RPMs. So interstate (long trips) are not really reccommended. You can vary the RPMs yourself, it's just something else to consider.
Keep in mind that summer tires are designed to work in summer termeratures. So not only do they not work in snow (at all!), but they definitely do not stick as well once the temperatures drop below 40.
Keeping all that in mind, I would still drive the G
Of course, that's only if there is no snow in the forecast.

Re: Which car to take on trip?
With lot's of selfish regrets, we are taking the Avant to NJ.
For next Friday, Accuweather predicts "possible snow", and the next day or so, "freezing rain". is possible in Short Hills. Crackerboys like me aint used to that kind of stuff, and, I think the Audi will fare better while up there,
Wifey has already accomodated to the extra space in the Audi to pack her gear.
My little DG G will have to sit safely in our garage until I get back. Ir is a good point about varying the RPMs if you are going to do the break-in per Infiniti.
Thanks to all for the sane and sagely advice. I guess reason prevails.
Happy and peaceful Thanksgiving to all .

Screw the rain... I wouldn't want to take my G to NJ, because every story I hear about somebody getting their rims jacked, or their windows rolled down, is always in NJ
