Here's an idea, it doesn't matter as long as it's synthetic and you change it frequently (4.5K miles) using quality filters!

Mobile 1 is crap for our cars. EP is better, but not by too much.

Anyone here using 0w30 or 0w40? How do you like it?

I use fram filters and Mobil 1 synthetic and my engine hasn't blown up yet and I doubt it ever will. Oils and filters being made today are of decent quality so it doesn't matter what brand you use.

just saying
I understand what you're saying... this can be a frustrating process. In general, this topic has pretty well been covered both here and on the 350Z forum. If you go just based on used oil analysis (UOA's, as opposed to opinion and feeling) for our engine, some (not an exhaustive list) of the best synthetics have been:

Mobil 1 0w-40 (not 5w, 10w, etc.)
Castrol Edge
German Castrol
Penzoil Platinum
Pennzoil Ultra
Amsoil

With respect to filters, the most recommended and highly regarded (again, not an exhaustive list) have been:

K&N
Purolator Pure One
Mobil
Bosch
Wix
Napa Gold
Royal Purple
Amsoil

What has been agreed upon by most here and on other forums is that Fram and the Wal-Mart brand filters are among the cheapest and most poorly made filters.

The UOA data collected from hundreds of VQ engines would strongly suggest otherwise. Some oils, such as Mobil 1 10w-30 (and several others) have wear numbers that indicate higher concentration levels of certain metals in the oil and TBN numbers that don't make for a good oil for our engines.

OP, I hope this helps. With respect to your tire question, go to both Consumer Reports and Tirerack for some very thorough reviews, comparisons and customer feedback.

Hope this helps.
Isa

show me the data that says using brand "x" motor oil and brand "y" oil filter will cause an engine failure! who cares about a silly lab test that has no impact on real world experience

How can you say it has no impact on real world experience?!

No, I doubt your engine will blow up immediately if you start using Mobil 1 10w-30, however if that oil is causing more wear to your engine (as indicated by these "silly lab tests") you may have engine problems in the future. If you care about your car and the longevity of the engine, why not use oil that is proven to be better for wear protection? Just because you want to save a couple bucks and buy cheap walmart filters and jugs of oil? Is that worth the potential problems down the road?

That's dumb to say that.. it's not like it's going to cause engine failure instantly... you're killing the life of the engine by using oil that isn't meant for your engine.

The lab tests actually are what people use to prove how there's an impact on real world experience.. they show the wear and tear from using different types of oils per oil change.. how is that not real world experience?

There are so many answers to this question and it really depends on personal preference. I started out using Mobil1 switched to RedLine, after reading the oil comparison chart after 1K miles I use nothing but AMSOIL 10W/30 and K&N filters every 4 months regardless of mileage. Some of the oil members listed above I wouldn't use in my Honda. (lawn mower)
