Question Navi car w/double din

Hey guys I want to add a double din TV in the front I went to a few places they told me that it is going to mess everything up. Is this true? I really want to add this for the ipod feature and video playback... I just want to know if people have done this and what gets messed up if you car has the Bose and Navi? Please help guys I am going to Al & Eds tomorrow people told me if anyone can do this they would be the best place to go to also get warranty for their work.

Thank you

And they didn't specify what it will mess up?

You need to buy a double din conversion kit either the JDM one from one of our vendors or the Metra kit from ebay or where ever. It comes with a new climate control piece.

Installing this will not mess anything up unless your installer can't get the steering wheel controls to work...

Buy the double din kit and then take it to and installer and tell him to install it.

They told me the Bluetooth, climate control and the wheel controls. What is the best place to buy the double din kit?

Dont bring it to an installer, its a complete waste of money! read the forums and if your still confused youtube it. it will take a while the first time but once you get it you can do it in any car and you will feel muuuch better!

and i suggest u get the JDM double din trim and AC control board(you can find them on ebay, RiversideInfiniti sells em, or if your in SoCal u can just pick it up from the Infiniti in Riverside like i did).

as for the install, you wont hurt anything, you will lose your navi voice and your dual climate control BUT you can re-enable them if your willing to do some work :P.

i stole this from another thread, and tht guy stole it from a 350z thread but it works, I have done it(inna modified way)

Linking the factory nav system to a new head unit...

For those of you trying to install a new head unit in your Z, but keep the existing factory navigation system, and keep the voice, the info below will work ! THis is what I did, and it works great, just like the factory navigation system does. Keep in mind that you will have to have a Mute capable head unit, and you will have to wire a seperate speaker for the nav voice. A small price to pay for the much better sound you will get out of an aftermarket head unit.

Anyways, here is what I did:

The output of the NAV system is about 7.5-9 volts. This is not enough voltage to trip a standard 12 volt (30A) relay. So, what I did was this. You have to setup a 2 stage system, composed of a transistor and 12v relay, to switch the mute circuit on a new head unit.

Parts I used:

1. Potter and Brumfield 12V Relay (Bosch will work too)

2. TIP31 high power NPN Transistor (Radio shack sells it)

3. Various length wires and crimp-type connectors

4. 1 kohm resistor (1/4 watt)

NAVI-SYSTEM WIRE MAP:

Mute wire from NAVI control to head unit - R/B

NAVI earth ground - B/P

NAVI Voice input + L/B

NAVI Voice input - W/B

Transistor circuit:

All transistors consist of a Base (B), Collector (C), and an Emitter (E). The pacakge will tell you, if you buy it from ratshack, or look online for a datasheet for your transistor. THis circuit will work for an NPN only. A pnp transistor will be wired differnetly, so make sure you get the proper parts !

1. Wire Mute (R/B) from NAVI control to the transistor Base (B) through a 1kohm resistor (Limits the current so you don't fry the TIP31).

2. Wire the Emitter (E) to vehicle ground

3. Wire the collector (C) to postion 85 on 12V relay

Relay CIrcuit:

1. From 3 above, wire the output of the collector to position 85 of a 12v relay.

2. Wire postion 86 to 12v switched by the ignition (only on when key is on)

3. Wire postion 30 of the 12v relay to vehicle ground

4. Wire positon 87 of the 12v relay to mute input on the new head unit.

5. Position 87a is not connected

Here's what happens:

When the voice control turns on for the navi system, it send the R/B wire high (7.5 volts). This voltage triggers the transistor to open up, and essentially provide ground to the relay. Once the relay is grounded, the relay is energized, and switches the constant ground (suppleid by terminal 30) to position 87, and supplies a ground signal output from the 12v relay. This ground signal MUTES your new head unit. THat's all...simple circuit, great results !

Don't forget that you will have to add a seperate speaker for navi voice under your seat, and run the 2 voice output wires from the navi control to this speaker. If you mount it under the driver's seat, you may have to turn the volume up slightly to hear it...

Good luck, and I hope this helps those who are adding aftermarket headunits to a Z with factory navigation...

I had to disagree with a couple things on this writeup...

1. the useless relay, i did not use one and mine works perfectly fine. why did i cut it out?

When the voice control turns on for the navi system, it send the R/B wire high (7.5 volts). This voltage triggers the transistor to open up, and essentially provide ground to the relay. Once the relay is grounded, the relay is energized, and switches the constant ground (suppleid by terminal 30) to position 87, and supplies a ground signal output from the 12v relay. This ground signal MUTES your new head unit. THat's all...simple circuit, great results!

at that point you are essentially turning your 7.5v signal into a ground signal with the transistor, so why the heck would you add a relay to that? lol i tossed out the relay, it works like a charm. keep the resistor tho :P

2. the speaker, i pride myself in my car's audio and that just seems ghetto to me... i took a couple wire splice connectors(under $2) at the +/- audio wires from teh navi harness n hooked them up to a line out converter($4-$10+). that line converter puts the signal at a lower voltage so i could hook it up to my component speaker amplifier without damaging it. if you dont have an amp to your door speakers you will probly need to use the external speaker.

Line Out Converter - http://ridersontheweb.com/avalanche/img_9540.jpg
Splice Connectors - http://www.alltrackusa.com/images/sp...disconnect.jpg

if you are still confused as to where to find these wires, when you install your stereo you will notice 2 harnesses that arent being used(they are from your navi and steering wheel) look at the wires of remaining two harnesses, then look for the one with the wires you need.

as for your dual climate control, desolder a button from your old board and solder it on your new one, its literally a 10min job from the time you take your old board out to putting your new one in(with the added button), moving buttons took me literally less than minute. and if you have the willow trim like i do you can hotswap the black buttons that come with the jdm ac control board with your willow ones, your also gunna need to add your outer DCC button to the new trim, sounds complicated, but its quite simple. theres a DIY on here somewhere...

your steering wheel controls can be restored with a "PAC" adapter buuut your head unit will have to support that harness, mine does not so i cant help ya there :/

PAC SWI-JACK for Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood & JVC
PAC SWI-PS for Dual, Jensen, Pioneer & Sony
PAC SWI-X for anything else, maybe everything...

DIY, I payed 225 to get it installed and later had to take apart the dash. Just learn how to do it its pretty easy
