Thescreensavers- thanks for all the info. I might go with the M1 0w-40 this sunday and see how that goes.
try more dealers.. haha.. i would..

also.. was the car bought from a dealer? if so, maybe you have a case? don't quote me on that.. i am not your lawyer..

agreed with the Castrol Syntec (GC) being expensive.. but during oil filter special times at autozone (every other month) they are like $32.99 for 5 quarts and a M1 or K&N filter.. i mean.. who doesn't buy it during that time..

i know 5w and 10w doesn't have much difference in Cali.. but psychologically, i like my cold oil flowing during cold starts..

i feel like 10w would be useful if his car was leaking oil.. since the thicker (when cold) oil will be less likely to leak overnight.. but i am no mechanic

What was the question? ....."tearing down the VQ35 and replace it with piston and rod....cost?
To start: a short block fully essembled with eagle rods, and wiesco piston..approx $3000.00+....gaskets, bolts, installation etc...another $2000.00+. give and take $5k-6K to have a short block built and installed...this is my math ....I'm doing one as of we speak.....take care

for anybody here that is thinking of replacing engine or tearing apart because of bad rings. Starting in 05 the factory used a very light expander behind the oil scraper ring..with almost any kind of carbon at all the ring will skip over the bore without removing much excess oil. For a few bucks you can add one quart of rislone (kerosene) to your present oil...drive it for one hundred miles then drain and add new oil dino 15W40 shell... this will work in most engines except those that have BROKEN rings.

Wow lots of replies lol. First off in my case I'm burning a quart of oil about every 1000km (650mi or so) I'm currently using german castrol 0w-30.

I've seen built short blocks go for $3000. I don't really care about the performance upgrade that's why I was looking to just have the rings replaced.

With that said, I'm still looking at around $2000 in labour to replace the rings give or take?

5W and 10W work fine in Michigan, why is Cali special?

Also, with as hot as these engines run you could use a 5W-50 to keep it from getting thru your rings.

He's burning oil, not leaking it. So a thicker cold weight isn't the issue.

And +1 to using cheaper oil if you're going thru it so fast. Expensive oils are expensive because they last longer, not because they perform better over the short term, from all I've read.

I'm sure that, by now, the OP has made his decision on what to do with his motor. If it were me, and knowing that I bought my car new and maintained it very well the entire time I had it, I'd probably have new rings installed and at least consider doing some other internal bottom end motor upgrades while I'm at it. Maybe upgrade to stronger and higher compression pistons and stronger connecting rods, plus stronger headgaskets. At least if that was done, you're pretty safe to not have to worry about blowing out the bottom end of the motor again anytime soon. I'm sure the bill for such a repair including parts and labor would be somewhere around $3500, but it's not that big of a gamble if you use a reputable shop for the work and do your research on which parts to buy.

Angry 2003 G35 Manual Coupe burning 3 quarts per tank

Hi guys,
I'm having major oil consumption issues on my G coupe 2003 MT with 110k miles. The car runs great but man does it consume oil. I went to the dealer for a consumption test, but when they warned me that if I didn't have any receipts and it was burning oil, they wouldn't help me. Does this Service Bulletin or TSB work for 2003 models? I went to the Arlington Dealer by the way which they totally suck btw.
I then got a quote for piston ring replacement and we're talking $3k+.

TSB is not a recall or warranty. It merely documents an issue with the car line. Unless you have a great extended warranty (and you would still need proof of regular service) I'm afraid you're SOL.

Sorry.

my 03 started eating oil after it hit about 145k. It eats about 1qt every 2000 miles. I just put in a qt of conventional oil every 2k until my oil change. The car drinks synthetic like kool aid though.

Yes, when I took it to this generic mechanic, he replaced my valve cover gaskets and still same oil consumption drama. Know of anything else I could check? I just want this fixed, really. Is it worth dropping $3k?

look into changing the o-rings that are on the valve covers. you can buy new covers (around $300) or do the $60 fix yourself. you can tell if theyre bad if you have oil in/around your spark plugs
