I drive in D and MM about the same. MM is mainly used for racing or parking lots when I don't want the auto shifting constantly as I cruise in the lot having to stop and start for people and cars.
I believe MM allows you to rev alittle higher then if its just in D and you floor it. The shifts should also be a tad faster then if you were to just floor it in D.
The car WON'T shift for you like some others when you reach redline...it will sit there and let you bounce off the rev limiter all day [not recommended...lol] I still hit that damn limiter in 1st sometimes. I do most my races from a roll around 3-4K RPMs...and MAN does that needle shoot up fast, I really have to be ready to get a good 1-2 shift without bouncing off the rev limiter.
For those of you that haven't had the chance to floor the car yet there is nothing like bringing the RPMs up to around 4K and then just MASHING the gas, it will kick you back in your seat like nothing else....can't wait for more mods...

One thing though, I was going to ask – for the most optimal torque/hp/speed increase on highway or on the street – you’re on a highway/street in auto, and you need to accelerate reaaaaaaaally quick (to kill that jerk or for whatever reasons), what are your actions?
Hit the gas pedal and then shift to MM
Shift to MM – hit the gas pedal
Hit the gas and shift to MM at the same time
Hit the gas and shift to MM at the same time and downshift to 3rd?
…anything else…?

as far as smoothness goes you just have to get used to downshifting with it and braking then realeasing as you downshift. It takes some time to get used to ive driven MM on my 02 Audi and G every mile of em. one thing is true it will not shift from 1-2 like audi or whatever else does which kinda sucks but what can you do it's best to have vdc off when using MM so you dont bounce as often off the limiter also try not downshift above 3K rpms
no offense meant, but i've had my car for six months and use MM all the time. if you guys are hearing a "clunk" there is either something wrong with your car, you are making some horrible shift decisions, or both. you should be able to brake in MM without a clunk in ANY gear. as you're braking, just leave the gear alone because the tranny will downshift on its own as you either stop or slow down. at a slow roll the car will drop to 2nd or if you stop completely it will drop to 1st on its own. if you're talking about braking into a corner and accelerating out of it, i would just drive the car as if it were a manual.... just make sure the tranny has grabbed the gear before you mash back on the gas. hitting the gas before a gear has been engaged may be an instance when you might hear a clunk. I'd obviously not make a habit of bouncing off the rev limiter. you're being rough on the engine and the VQ loses a bit of steam just before redline anyhow, ....so it makes no sense to ever bounce it.

the 05 coupe(this is what I have)
- Will not upshift in MM on it's own no matter what. If you take it past 6600RPM the rev limter kicks in, but gear remains.
- due to slight delay when shifting, if you are pounding it hard you need to hit the shifter at 6200- 6400RPM so it shifts by 6600 to avoid the limiter
- The system WILL prevent you from downshifting to too low a gear/at too high a rev.
i.e. you can't downshift to 2nd at 80MPH
When used correctly MM can offer amazing results
1st is good to 30MPH, 2nd to 60MPH, 3rd to 90MPH
3rd becomes very useful in freeway passing, i.e. move to MM, (it will start in 4th) down shift to 3rd, stomp it to the floor and fly by the bozo doing 58 in the fast lane.

No you dont have to let go off the gas when you switch gears in MM. I cant drive in regular D any more. Ever since I learned to use the MM, its just not the same in D. I think im a control freak or something
