Evil White Smoke...???
Evil White Smoke...???
Ok, so I know I'll get some crap for this, it's possibly my fault.
Alright. I bought a 2007 G35 coupe (salvage) from auction and literally put it back together when it had 40k miles. I fixed the body and the engine/tranny seemed fine as was and didn't decide to do anything to it.
When I first changed the oil I noticed that the car didn't have a dipstick (meaning it was missing) and I never bothered to replace it. I really noticed no blowback of oil or anything. The car runs smoothly.
I'm now at 55k on the car and I changed the oil again a few hundred miles ago.
I decided to changed the air filter too, it seemed dirty and I forgot to put on the MAF connection. The car started and immediately bogged, I turned it off, reconnected it... and turned it back on. The CEL was on, but the car was now running well.
Now, I didn't bother disconnecting battery to turn off CEL, haven't had time. Now, last night I went to the gym (another couple hundred miles later) and I noticed a weird smell from the car, it was foul, burning.... I slowed down to see if I smelt it more, and it wasn't very strong, and I figured I was only 3 stops from home. So I drove it home, the smell wasn't strong till I parked it. Then since it was 1am in the morning and dark as hell, I popped the hood and took a look.
What happened next is I saw a small amount of white smoke (not steam) come from the engine compartment, mainly near the rear/driver side. I decided to wait to check the engine after it cools down today.
I woke up and found a 4" pancake size wad of oil under my car. I checked the radiator and found it full. I've ordered the dipstick and it will arrive tomorrow by UPS. I can't imagine that the blowback would be enough after so many miles to actually provide a smoking effect that was that big and obvious.
At 55k miles, I can't imagine this has blown a gasket (by the way, no smoke in the exhaust) ...
Any ideas?

my first bet was that you got a plastic bag caught against your exhaust near the cat. i had that happen once - same smoke and smell that you described. the puddle of oil is troubling, however.
i'd check around the pan (upper, lower, drain plug, etc) to see if there are any leaks and monitor your oil level closely for the next few days.

^I would imagine so, not sure though. A couple of days ago my oil cap decided to pop off and I had oil all over the top of the engine, so I would assume there's enough pressure for the same to happen from the dipstick hole.
Thank you both for replying. I'm going to wait till tomorrow when the dipstick arrives and...
1) Disconnect negative battery term. Pump brakes a few times.
2) Check oil level and make sure it's right (if not, get it to the right place)
3) Clean my engine to remove any residual oil.
4) Remove bottom shroud under oil pan.
5) Remove top plastic above engine for viewing pleasure.
6) Start car and see what it does.... if there is any leak anywhere.
Hopefully that will answer something.

i would say it is from your missing dip stick... i have forgotten to put mine back in and i got a smell and a little smoke come from the engine area and when i put it back in, it has never happened since.
