mysterious clicking noise with front suspension. please help!

I've been troubleshooting this problem for about 2 weeks now, with a couple of my (knowledgeable) friends and even a tire/suspension shop.. and we can't pinpoint the exact issue. I feel like I'm chasing a ghost!

There's a relatively loud clicking noise coming from my front passenger's side suspension. I've replaced my tie rod (which was very loose on the ball joint), my lower control arm (because we thought it was the bushing). After those were replaced, no clicking noise for about a day, then it came back after 24 hours.

The noise occurs when the car changes directions or going over speed bumps. I can drive forward on normal roads all day and never hear anything.. but as soon as i back into a parking spot, unload the suspension at a stoplight on a slight backward hill, or gently go over a speedbump, clicking is loud.

Everything is tight under the car. I have no idea what to think. Any suggestions? I'm stumped.

My guess is it's not coming from the front, it's coming from the back and it's the dreaded rear axle click. If you're positive it's from the front check your lug nuts and make sure they're tight. Other than that I have no idea.

I haven't heard many members here have a click issue with their front end, usually it's a knock, clunk, or pop.

So I finally got done putting my coilovers on check for a review soon thanks to Ark performance. Anyways I found out that my bushings for my lower control arms are shot, and I either need to get those replaced or find a new control arm. After That the noise should stop. A-arm was not the problem because the noise was still present after I put in a new camber kit

Your LCAs wont click when the bushings go bad. They will clunk and pop.

then it might be a totally different problem with you, i suggest to raise up your car and make sure all bolts are tighten and if that does not work then take it to a professional to have a look at it

no, if it was the compression rod bushings then it wouldn't be a clicking sound but more of a knocking sound

anything clicking related is either your REAR AXLE which mine is doing now......or its something with your brakes/hub/lug nuts up front....

The OP sounds like you are actually having a rear axle click honestly....everytime I put my car into reverse, turn gradually while not on the accelerator very hard I have clicking sounds.....

Sometime soon I will be installing my SPL Compression rod bushings and whiteline shock tower bushings to complete all my bushings up front!

I notice you run 20" wheels. It is very likely that it is your front lower compression rod bushings. Mine go out every 4 months. They make all kinds of noises. SPL makes a solid bushing replacement for that piece and their are rumors of an Energy Suspension & possibly a Whiteline replacement poly type busing coming out soon. You need to have a shop with a press (I think 10k pounds) press them into the lower control arm.

This is a very common issue and their are a lot of threads out their on it with more info. Good luck, I know how annoying the noise can get.

^^I don't agree Chris. Thecomp rod bushing won't make a click, it will sound like a lower control are going bad; either a clunk, knock, or a pop. truong was right on there.

I agree with G35man04, I had a similar problem on my old 325i. It turned out to be a bad axle, and I needed to get the whole thing replaced. Any clicking, especially when you turn, is usually an axle.

That's all well and good, but there are no axles up front.
