2005 6MT mid acceleration lag issue. Need opinion or fix.

The issue i'm experiencing is an acceleration lagging issue when I accelerate or flooring the gas at a cruising speed.

For example, I'll be driving in 6th gear at around 65mph and the RPMs (im guessing) is roughly at around 3k (give or take). When I go to floor the gas, the car doesn't accelerate and climb strong through the RPMs. What happens is that when I floor the gas, the RPMs will rev and jump from 3k to say around 4k and then quickly drops back down to 3k and then the car will slow accelerate up the RPMs. This will happen at any cruising speed and whatever cruising gear im at.

I don't experience any acceleration lag when I accelerate from a dead stop and shift through all the gears. It only happens while cruising and then flooring the gas.

This never happened before till a month ago im guessing.

Car info:
2005 6MT Coupe
Stock (no mods)
est. 92,000 miles
regularly change synthenic oil
recently changed air filter
changed spark plugs spring 2011

I thought maybe it was an air filter issue because it felt like the filter was clogged so I recently changed it but that did not resolve the issue.

I thought maybe the fuel filter needed to be changed but read the fuel filter is maintenance free and that the fuel filter is inside the gas tank.

I thought maybe the timing belt needed to be changed but read its a timing chain so there's no need to change that.

I do need to change my belts but don't think that would cause my issue.

Can it be a fuel pump issue?

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your clutch may be slipping. I'm not very good at diagnosing problems so I'm sure some others will chime in soon.

Im pretty sure its your clutch slipping. Try going into second and giving it a lot of gas and see if the rpms match the acceleration. If not you need a new clutch.

The thing thats happening is your clutch has lost the amount of friction (or holding power) it had when it was new. Since there isn't enough friction due to the material being worn down (or a couple other things) the clutch slips against the pressure plate and flywheel, therefore not transferring the full amount of power, which is why your rpm's jump up.

Flooring it in 6th never results in any wild acceleration, it's a cruising gear.

That said, with a MT, your RPMs should NEVER jump while in gear, it could be time to replace the clutch. Or it could be as simple as a clutch pedal adjustment (ie: if it was adjusted before it might be putting some tension on the pressure plate not allowing the clutch to fully engage). At 90+K it's perfectly plausible clutch is worn out depending on how the car has been driven.

92k on a G clutch is not too shabby.

Thanks everyone for your diagnosis.

It looks like its time for a new clutch. Do you think I will also need a new flywheel?

Any suggestions on an affordable clutch.

While your at it I would recommend getting a new flywheel as well. Lots of people get the JWT found here: https://g35driver.com/forums/engine-...-shipping.html
